Dirt Bikes, ATVs Target of Proposed East Haven Town Ordinace

The town will hold a public hearing later this month to discuss the proposed law, which would regulate the operation of dirt bikes, ATVs and snowmobiles throughout East Haven.

East Haven officials are currently crafting a new town ordinance that targets the activity of dirt bike and ATV riders — many of whom frequently create noise and public safety issues for residents throughout town.

A public hearing on the proposed new law — an "Ordinance Regulating the Operation or Use of Dirt Bikes, All–Terrain Vehicles, or Snowmobiles" — will take place on Oct. 30 at the East Haven Senior Center, beginning at 7 p.m.

The hearing was originally set for Nov. 12 at the Town Council's regularly scheduled meeting on Oct. 1. But it was then rescheduled during a special meeting on Oct. 10 for later this month.

Concerns regarding public safety and dirt bikes and ATVs recklessly riding about town roads has been a frequent and ongoing topic of discussion among residents, as well as right here on East Haven Patch.

In February, several riders were arrested here after they allegedly taunted East Haven Police and then posted video of their activities online.

If approved, East Haven's new ordinance would be one of the most aggressive in the state "because we are enacting penalties," Town Attorney Joseph Zullo told town council members at their Oct. 1 meeting.
