BBQ to Support Alzheimer’s Association

When Walter Jofre Jr of East Haven first became involved in the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s, his grandmother had just been diagnosed with the disease. He saw a sign for the New Haven Walk and knew it was something he needed to do. When his grandmother passed away in 2008, everyone asked if he was still going to participate in the event. His answer was, “Of course.”

This September, Walter will participate in his third Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Last year, Walter held a barbeque fundraiser leading up to Walk with what Walter estimates to be almost 100 people in attendance. This year, Walter will hold the same fundraiser, and his only goal is to improve from last year.

Due to popularity, the fundraiser is moving from the backyard to East Haven’s Foxon Firehouse. It will be September 1st from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children 5-12 years old and free for children under 5. Food, soda, water, coffee and dessert will all be included. As Walter’s father is from Argentina, all of the food served is authentic Argentinian barbeque. There will also be door prizes with items ranging from Crossfit memberships to electronics to restaurant gift cards.

There are limited tickets available for purchase, so be sure to contact Walter before they’re all gone!Walter will participate in the New Haven Walk to End Alzheimer’s on September 29th with his team, which is made up largely of family, friends and co-workers. Walter’s mother-in-law recently began showing signs of Alzheimer’s, and so he is still driven by a personal connection.

Before Walk, Walter knew little about the resources available to him through the Alzheimer’s Association. Now, he walks to help spread awareness and important information to those effected by the disease.

Going into Walk, Walter has one goal: “Giving it 100% of me,” he says. “And doing what I can to raise money and get awareness out.”
