The town moves forward with its appeal of the case, which awarded the Jones family $900,000 in damages after the young black man was shot to death by an East Haven Police officer in April 1997.
The Town of East Haven's appeal of the Malik Jones case ruling continues to move forward with judges hearing oral arguments yesterday at the Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals in New York City, according to a report in the New Haven Independent. A federal jury awarded $900,000 to the estate of Malik Jones in October 2010, 13 years after a former East Haven Police officer, Robert Flodquist, chased him into New Haven and then shot the 21-year-old dead at close range. Jones was unarmed at the time. Flodquist later said Jones gave him a "go to Hell" look, and the car may have been slowly rolling backwards, so he thought his life was at risk. After both the the state's attorney and the the U.S. Department of Justice chose not to pursue …

Stop the criticism, investigation of the East Haven police. They risk their lives to protect us.
When I served on the East Haven Town Council our police department was well respected in Connecticut. The very unfortunate situation that happened with Malik Jones was on the forefront of everyone's mind because it involved the hot topic of police pursuits and how they could be avoided to lessen the exposure to further liability. On occasion, in executive session, the town attorney would update us to the status of the case but I knew in my heart if funding was required to settle the case I would never vote in favor of it. I believed the officers involved with that pursuit were justified in their actions, as found by the State's Attorney's Office. There was no intent to kill Malik Jones. It was a very unfortunate situation where a suspect …

A day after winning a $900,000 in court for the shooting death of her son by an East Haven cop, Emma Jones thanked jurors and said she hopes her fight might save another life. Jones spoke to the media Friday afternoon at the Orange Street office of her attorney, David Rosen, who helped her win a major victory in court. Thirteen years after an East Haven cop chased Malik Jones into New Haven and then shot him dead at close range, a federal jury awarded $900,000 to his kin on Thursday. The award was split as follows: $525,000 for Malik's death, and $375,000 for the loss of the ability to enjoy a relationship with his daughter, Priya, who's now 16. The decision was the latest victory for Emma Jones, a lifelong civil rights activist. Wearing a…

Three locals opine on the Malik Jones verdict.
At an East Haven hair salon Friday afternoon, two stylists and a customer named Maryanne -- all town residents -- talked about Thursday's court decision to pay Malik Jones' estate $900,000 in compensatory damages. That's the price tag a federal judge put on Jones' life. On April 14, 1997, Jones was shot to death by an East Haven cop after a high-speed chase into New Haven. Attorney Hugh Keefe, representing East Haven, vowed to appeal Thursday's decision. The women in the hair salon, who asked not to be identified, wholeheartedly backed the police, saying they did what they had to do. One of the hairstylists said she was in her car that fateful night and saw Jones and the cops race by. She said her car shook, and 13 years later her voice …

Long-awaited verdict on the Malik Jones civil case just came in.
(Written by Paul Bass) Thirteen years after an East Haven cop chased Malik Jones into New Haven and then shot him dead at close range, a federal jury Thursday decided his life was worth $900,000. The jury, sitting in U.S. District Court in Hartford, decided that the town of East Haven owes that money to the dead man's estate in compensatory damages, in a lawsuit brought by Jones' mother, Emma Jones. It was the latest twist in a long-running civil rights drama that has exposed raw debates over race and criminal justice and consumed countless hours of state and federal authorities' time. David Rosen, the attorney representing Emma Jones, called Thursday's verdict a "vindication for Malik's mother who has hung in there for more than 13 years …

No wonder why New Haven has a racist reputation! Seriously, you people need to get out in the real world once in awhile in which your racism will be exposed and you'll feel such shame for being so willfully ignorant.   more ›
