The beloved longtime WTNH meteorologist and East Haven resident passed away today at the age of 66 after 'living a dream" as a Connecticut weatherman.
Dr. Mel Goldstein, the longtime WTNH meteorologist and shoreline East Haven resident, passed away today at the age of 66, according to a report on WTNH. Dr. Mel, as most people know him, was one of the most well-known figures in the state, having served as a full-time weatherman for the New Haven television station since 1986 — until his ailing health forced him into retirement last October. Goldstein was diagnosed more than 15 years ago with multiple myeloma, a form of bone cancer that affects the body’s immune system. WTNH reports that VP and General Manager Mark Higgins said in an e-mail to station staff, "We not only lost a great journalist today, but a great humanitarian and close friend." Goldstein gave a special "farewell forecast…

The Internal Revenue Service opened the 2012 tax filing season by announcing taxpayers have until April 17 to file their tax returns. The IRS encourages taxpayers to e-file as it is the best way to ensure accurate tax returns and get faster refunds. The IRS also announced a number of improvements to help make this tax season easy for taxpayers. This includes new navigation features and helpful information on IRS.gov and a new pilot to allow taxpayers to use interactive video to get help with tax issues. “At the IRS, we’re working hard to make the process of filing your taxes as quick and easy as possible,” said IRS Commissioner Doug Shulman. “Providing quality service is one of our top priorities. It not only reduces the burden on …

No requests anywhere in state to reschedule; making a change would require a court order.
Rumors have been swirling throughout Connecticut - even in communities that never lost power - that Election Day would be rescheduled from Tuesday, Nov. 8 because of the remaining electricity outages caused by the October snowstorm. This is not true, according to Av Harris, spokesman for the Secretary of the State's office. "We have had zero requests from any community to postone" Election Day, Harris said Friday afternoon. Harris said the secretary of the state's office has been in close communication with registrars of voters throughout Connecticut, via a series of conference calls. Additionally, Harris said, because Election Day is part of state law ("the Tuesday after the first Monday of November," according to the statute), to change …

Anyone who spent time with Jack Brereton quickly learned one thing about him: he loved East Haven. It was his hometown and he had an encyclopedic recall of the names, faces, facts and figures that made up the history of his town. He once told an interviewer he could remember the names of all his teachers from grammar school -- an amazing feat for an 84-year-old man. When he died last Friday, July 29, one of the last direct ties to a large chunk of East Haven’s history was lost. It was his knowledge and love of the town -- for what it was and what it would become -- that led Mayor April Capone to name him the official Town Historian in 2009. When talking about him Monday morning, Capone said, “Jack Brereton was not only a wealth of …

Van Valkenburg died Dec.1 at age 82.
Many East Haven residents may have known Eileen Van Valkenburg by her short stature, her penchant for walking instead of asking for rides or her years maintaining the salad bar at Stop & Shop. But family members and friends at Talmadge Park nursing home probably knew her best for her landscape drawings, some of which hang on the walls there. Van Valkenburg, 82, died Dec. 1 at the nursing home. She was born in New Haven and moved with her husband, John, and two daughters, Nancy DeSanti and Diane Pretak, to Torrington in the 1960s. When John died, Eileen moved to East Haven where she lived with her brother, Richard Dorman, on Henry Street until her health began to deteriorate. "It's hard because she [had] been sick for a couple of years, so …
