The more obstacles the better the chance at the best solution, avoidance. Shooters pick softRead More targets, Pre-planning is a great thing, but these are plans that are for "after" the shooting starts. The focus should be stronger on stopping them. Its sickening we need to think like this especially when talking about 5 year olds in a school.

Yes George you are correct. Locked doors, etc... How did that work for ya? Even if someone was inRead More place, what are the odds they would have been at that front door at that moment to have stopped it. A guard with a 6 shot revolver or 9 shot semi up against what Lanza had would not have stand a chance. Think about it. Hardened perimeter may have worked but we will never know.

Having a plan is great, it does not however offer an immediate response to an active threat. SandyRead More Hook had locked doors, they had working phones, they had someone place an immediate call to the police. What it didn't have is someone on site which may have stopped the massacre.
Commencement exercises will be this weekend.

I thought UConn had a new logo... a more vicious and aggressive husky.

Part of the problem can be found by just looking at UConn. This 5.5 million deficit for the statesRead More other schools can be covered by just stop spending. 2 new academic buildings for UConn, 53 million dollars; and a new basketball practice facility for guess who - UConn, at a cost of 35 million. Sure, 28 million of that cost was covered by private donations. And 42 million dollars for a new engineering building for guess who-UConn.

Why not give them dinner as well. Put the control of raising kids on the back of society for theRead More parents must be to busy to get up early, feed their kids and sent off to school. More un-funded liberal programs that will doom this country.

Correction. The son in law is not a lawyer. He was a member of the BOF for many years. Sorry for theRead More mistake.

Since Nick raised the issue of property ownership I looked it up. First, Nick is a friend of mineRead More and this was done not to go aagainst his thoughts in the matter. But I want to ask him one question. Does he actually think this property owner, who purchased the property in May of 1997, did so with the thought that he could rent the building to the town and make a quick buck. Purchased that property which is now paying taxes on an assessment of $2,143,680 dollars. Did all this just so it could be rented to the BOE. On a second note, just wondering, how many "students" are enrolled for AE programs? Are all from EH as law requires? And why are we, the taxpayers paying for Taekwondo classes offered? Just my thoughts.

I would agree with much of what you say, but the origination of the mess indeed ocurred for theRead More reasons I stated. You were probably not one of the officers called to that meeting, you would have remembered it. I may be incorrect but I think I recall the brother of a former chief throwing an all time classic rant to close the meeting. Although I suspect that I would agree with your assessment of the school system I would caution you that the BOE is independent. Meddling from the mayors office or TC, regardless of who is in office is problematic and I doubt would result in any acceptable solutions. I would suggest that management of our housing stock and mil rate would go the furthest over time in helping to create the right environment for change. Then I would couple that with cherry picking key boe candidates from both parties with a common vision and keep them there over a period of time.

Respectfully, Kim, every dollar of the education budget that is spent heating, lighting, cleaning,Read More supplying, maintaining or administrating a school building isn't teaching our children anything. We spend a lot of more of our total education budget on these costs than other towns our size and economic profile do. I would argue that has to impact the quality of the education receive, and could be fixed simply by the board having a better vision for how the district's schools are configured. Put the savings back into teachers, curriculum and materials.
Kim April 9, 2013 at 02:06 pm
As it should be, the Education budget should be the largest. It is not a question of looking at theRead More buildings and how much they cost...it is about EDUCATION. East Haven is so far behind the times in terms of education, and test scores, other than 1 school, are horrible. It is no wonder we lose so many to magnet schools, that we STILL have to pay for. WE need to keep moving in the right direction...no matter what the cost.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyrannyRead More of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. God bless you Joe Maturo. East Haven turns its lonely eyes to you to shepherd us through this time of financial inequity and fiscal darkness.

Schools are always trying to make their mascot more politically correct or more fierce. Note theRead More disappearance of Indian mascots ( St John's Redmen) and other ethnic totems. U of Iowa is always trying to make its emblematic hawkeye look more fierce. The result usually looks like a crazed chicken and the fans reject it.

What idiots. Is it the governors idea?

So after they make a big deal about Morgan (Clinton) High School "stealing" the UCONN logoRead More and forcing them to make changes, UCONN goes ahead and changes their own logo. Just so typical of this school/state. Does anyone really care about the look of the husky dog? And of course there will be costs associated with this change. Now we know why they have to continue to raise the tuition at state schools. Only in CT.

I can not believe that for 3 inches of snow this is so aggravating to people. Doesn't matter who isRead More in office the blame is the same . When April was in it was her and the guy that ran PW, now its Joe and the guy that runs PW. As I have said before and I will say it again I don't know who in their right mind would want to be in any administrative position in this town. They are attacked and accused of not knowing how to do their jobs. Who ever gets the nod in November good luck to them I hope they are prepared for all the negative remarks. The whole blame game is what this pitiful society of ours has become. So easy to sit in your house and write terrible things about people on the computer. Everybody wants it done yesterday.
