Sure, if you're the bicyclist you can - and should - do that, I agree. My point was that thisRead More article is about which towns are the safest for bicyclists and so my point was that I'm not sure that just because some towns have task forces, outreach, and engagement actually makes them truly any safer in reality without widening some roads, which are typically pretty narrow in CT, too narrow for cars and bikes to correctly share them.
Lesley July 10, 2014 at 12:23 pm
My apologies. I misunderstood.

Yes, it should follow that "distracted cycling" is against the law - easy enough to findRead More out. Enforcement of laws is certainly important safety of all users of the road, and is recognized as such, but there are four others that are necessary for a Town to become Bike-Friendly, which is the point of the survey initiative. Linda was on to one of the others - Education. For the rest of the "E"s, go to www.bikeleague.org/content/5-es and follow what is happening nation-wide to make cycling a safe and acceptable activity everywhere. As for this initial survey, the results are clearly not very accurate, and hopefully many more people will care to participate next time.

I didn't see any stats about how many bike accidents there were? In Fairfield, we see tons ofRead More bicycles. Most do not follow the rules of the road...they go the wrong way, they fail to signal, they fail to yield the right of way, at stop signs, and most are adults who certainly should know better. Yesterday I saw a man on a scooter, without a helmet, on So. Benson Rd...ON THE PHONE! I really believe that most of the roads, in Fairfield are unsafe for bicycling. It's not the fault of the roads, but traffic is very heavy in this town, and people do not use caution and common sense. I really believe a bike in this town, is extremely dangerous.

Paul, I am assuming you are referring to Sen. Reid? This legislation is being presented by Sen.Read More Patty Murray (D-WA) and Sen. Mark Udall (D-CO). They intend to re-write the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 to go around the SCOTUS decision. I guess the SCOTUS, which deals in only constitional issues, means nothing to these people. Don't like a decision - change legislation, which will be overturned anyway.

The Supreme Court’s ruling last week in the Hobby Lobby case wasn’t based on aRead More fundamental right found in the First Amendment or anywhere else in the Constitution. When the justices said that closely held corporations have religious rights that let them refuse to pay for insurance plans that cover contraceptives, they based their decision on a 1993 law passed by Congress, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act......That means Congress has the ability to rewrite federal law to overrule the court’s decision, and Senate Democrats have wasted little time coming up with a bill to do just that......It would be surprising if the bill picked up more than two or three Republican votes since it praises the Affordable Care Act, which is officially loathed by the Republican Party. It’s a message bill, in the cynical parlance of Capitol Hill, which will die by filibuster in the Senate and has no chance of reaching the floor of the House. But at least that message is clear, and next week senators will have to reveal whether they think employers should have the right to intrude on their employees’ lives.

Richard: In answer to the family/guest question... I frequent Newport, R.I. quite often during theRead More summer. I know that residents can go to the town hall and request a limited number of parking passes for these occasions. I, too, was under the impression the E.H. resident beach parking pass was for the large parking lot. I didn't receive one this year with my tax bill as I did in the past. Are they available at town hall? Are they being enforced?
Richard Poulton June 28, 2014 at 07:51 am
Good morning CV. All well and good for a planned visit. But, again throwing the wrench into theRead More wheel, what about that spontaneous visitor just dropping by? What do you do, run out and wave him off from parking? I know from experience that NH has "residence parking" only streets and problems still arise. There is no easy fix to this issue and nothing done by the town will ease the neighbors compliants. The PD just has to enforce the existing parking regulations. Tag and tow those blockiing hydrants, to close to corners, obstructing, etc... I wish these people well tonight (fire works).
CitizenVoice June 28, 2014 at 02:02 pm
Geez Richard, you must have a box full of wrenches. By the way, I just got my EH Resident ParkingRead More Pass in the mail. I'm taking the kids down there today and plan to park about 1/2-way to Morris Cove on the back road & walk the rest of the way down through the little league fields while the kids bike in (great use for our walkie-talkies). At our house we've become the masters of work-arounds, but I do feel bad for the folks who live down there. When I lived in Short Beach, in Branford, we took to leaving lots of creative notes on cars that didn't belong there. Short of police action and vandalism, a "creative note" won't solve the problem, but it will make the writer feel better. Have a great weekend.
George Kenyon June 20, 2014 at 06:48 pm
It should be pay to park for non residence and issue residence stickers to the residence in the areaRead More to park on city roads. Again, however good luck with enforcement.

I thought we did need beach stickers? Isn't that why there are attendants at the parking lots? I getRead More a sticker with my tax bill every year . Did that change? When?

The court case is Leydon v. Greenwich (ct supreme court 2001) and it is a basic first amendment caseRead More - we can't restrict assess to the beach because a large class of people would not have the right to speak freely at the beach location (especially If we take any fed funding for parks and rec, etc) greenwich gets around it by charging like $99 for a summer long beach pass if paid in jan and Feb at town hall one day a week or paid with tax bill... and $40 a day if sold in the summer at the beach (and $10 a day if sold at town hall - still during restricted times each day/week) East haven could easily implement a local resident on street parking pass available at town hall for reduced rate and the parking lot at the beach, ball field, elementary school and water park all be restricted to sales during the winter and midweek for discount and high daily summer rate to park - especially on weekends and holiday. It can be hard to get, just not impossible. Pretty much the same at the jersey shore (beach badges worn on person are cheap for the season sold in winter and higher for one week (short term rental) and even more expensive for one day access (day tripper)

Very cute video - I thoroughly enjoyed it :) I love coyotes - I have a pair of coyotes that liveRead More in the woods behind my condo complex near the airport My coyotes come out late at night (usually around 2AM) and they are just gorgeous I'm hoping someday my coyote pair will have pups, I would love to see some coyote pups grow up I also have some foxes that live in the woods and they are just as gorgeous as the coyotes I have no fear living so close to wild animals - the coyotes (or any of my wild animal friends) have never bothered me and they run off as soon as something scares them I figure the coyotes, along with the rest of wild critters living in suburban areas have as much right as we do to live here I mean, we did take over all of the animals land & they do have some rights to live; where they can manage to scrape out a living Humans & wild animals can co-exist as long as the humans respect the animals space and understand their needs
