Readers' Choice 2012: Nominate Your Favorites

We're compiling the best of Madison, Clinton, North Branford, Branford, North Haven and East Haven. Tell us where you love to shop, eat, take your kids, which services you can’t live without. We want to know, and so do your neighbors!

There is a lot to celebrate about East Haven: great parks, great restaurants and great retail shopping.

But who do you think is the best?

Help Patch determine the best of the best in by entering your nominations in each one of these categories. (Click on the category and then place your nomination in the comments stream at the bottom of the article).

We will be accepting nominations until July 9.

Then, sometime after July 9, we'll put together a poll allowing you a chance to vote on which nominee you think is best. Whoever gets the most votes will be named the Readers' Choice winner.

Thanks for staying on top of it, Julie. I'll look forward to the updates, hoping optimistically that there will be some. One other point I'd like to make piggybacking on what I wrote last night: If folks had additional choices here in town, we could experience better "one stop shopping". Currently, while we try to support local businesses, and we do... When time is crunching, I'll drive a little further out of the way, to hit all the stores I need in one fell swoop. This is the honest truth. Having so many types of businesses entirely lacking actually hurts the existing businesses here, in the long run. Current business owners are painfully aware of this. They need the business development, as much as the town overall does. Something has got to be done, to encourage new business. It's so disappointing that we've waited months for an update. Hoping no news, thus far, means good news.

Hey. How come the Mayors name is printed on those banners hanging on Main Street? That doesn't seem right.

Hey . What are we voting for today? How about a plug for Demir's , that restaurant behind the East Haven Mall and next to the fire department. I've never had a bad meal there. Excellent Italian and Continental food. The name is a little confusing as you can't tell what they serve. Always found excellent food, good prices and comfortable environment.

I said this before and i will say it untill it gets done, The Center of Town looks like Winter not Summer. Eleven more days tell 4th of July and the Flower Containers our full of coffee cups, candy rappers or weeds, If we cant afford Flowers then PW should remove them. The New Fountain " not one Flower" The Rotary Club should be upset over this it was there idea to have it in the Center. I want our Town to be the best and look good to Mr Mayor please lets reach out to some groups in Town to dress it up. I am sure we can get this done.

Annex Auto is in New Haven. Dursos is the best around.

Sam excellent comments. Is the public works dept really too busy to clean up the flower pots in the center? Mr. Mayor let's take some pride in our town. Also the overgrowth & weeds on much of the sidewalks around route 80 & North high st is an eyesore. I rarely see public works anywhere in the town doing landscape work. Other towns do a much better job why can't we?

Is there a fresh seafood store in town? A women's clothing store? A toy store? And, where exactly would I find live music? Are we just talking about EH or do we include the surrounding area? I find myself traveling out of town more frequently every year to shop for goods & services and, of course, any form of live entertainment. Sam: I, too, would like to know... Where have all the flowers gone? I travel the shoreline towns quite a bit and after driving down through Madison, Guilford, & Branford, East Haven can be a visual let-down.

Came buy the Fountain in the Center last night around 8:30 The water sprinklers going full out watering nothing, not one flower to be seen like the rest of the Containers in the Center. There must be away we can have some pride in the Center and make it look nice. The Town should buy the flowers then let the Garden Club look for help planting them. Maybe PW can do it or P&R. We need the Town looking good or we will never have a Readers Choice as one of the best.

CitizenVoice: That's a good question. And your nominations do not have to be within East Haven. It's a regional poll that also includes Branford, North Branford, North Haven, Madison, Guilford and Clinton. Hope that helps answer the question!

Since I live in the center, and one of the many flower containers is at the end of my street, I would be willing to "adopt" a container.I to am ashamed of the appearance of our center & town! As far as the best from the list, I'm guessing for this poll we mention the town we reside in. I can only think of a few because some of the "best" do not exist, Best Burger- Veggie Burger at Chillis, Best Ice Cream- Sweet Shop,Best Veggie Menu- Bistro,Best Hair Salon- Lisa & Marie's, Best Cleaner -Blue Jay, Best Marina- Farm River Marina.

Everyone: I will be meeting with Art DeSorbo early next week for another economic development update. We had a meeting set for yesterday, but I had to postpone due to a schedule conflict that arose on my end. And so, one of the issues I'll add to my list is the flower containers downtown. Just an FYI.
Sam Giglio July 07, 2012 at 05:27 PM
Sue Stacey has a great idea, ADOPT A Flower Container, Lets see The Town Hall Employees can take the two going into Thown Hall. The Fire Dept. can get one along with the Police Dept, PW,P&R. BOE, and so on. I will be the first to write a check for a Container, I will plant it and maintain it. There are many Clubs and groups in Town who can get a Container All we need is the support of the Mayor. If they cant seam to find the money to make our Town look good then reach out to us who want to help. Then maybe we can receive a top vote as one of a nice Shore Line Town.

Suggestion: I am sure the Girl Scouts, Cubs & Boy Scouts would love to get involved. I have a kid in each organization and they really like doing this stuff. So who wants to go to the Castle & petition the king?
Doreen Boudreau Hausler July 07, 2012 at 06:57 PM
I agree, CV. I'm on the committee for one of the local Boy Scout troops. This sort of community service project is right up their alley. And, would be a nice thing for all of us to enjoy.

Julie - Any news to report from the meeting 3 weeks ago?
Lou July 09, 2012 at 05:13 PM
East Haven has become the "armpit" of CT.
Julie Weisberg (Editor) July 09, 2012 at 05:14 PM
Lise: Unfortunately, I was unable to attend that meeting. And I did have an interview scheduled with Mr DeSorbo for last Friday morning, but — as I mentioned in my comment lower down on the thread yesterday — I had to postpone it due to a scheduling conflict that arose. However, I spoke with the Mayor's Office earlier today, and they are working on setting up a time for us to meet this week. So, I should have a general economic development update posted before the end of this week. However, I have a story I'm filing tomorrow morning that's economic development related. Additionally, SuperCuts opened its doors last week. I stopped in to the shop over the weekend for a quick chat with the staff. Their grand opening is next week. And there are three other storefronts that are opening in town as well. So, I'm going to be combining that all in the same piece for tomorrow.
Lise Cavallaro July 09, 2012 at 05:23 PM
Thanks Julie. I took a little Patch vacation. Looking forward to the article and hopefully good news.
Julie Weisberg (Editor) July 09, 2012 at 05:28 PM
Lise: No problem. I certainly understand — and I know how important an issue economic development is for the town. In my opinion, tomorrow's story is all good news. In addition to Supercuts, the other three new storefronts are small businesses. But good to see the spots filled. And the other news has to do with Mr DeSorbo looking to attract new businesses to move into town. Again, I'll have that up first thing tomorrow morning.
Julie Weisberg (Editor) July 10, 2012 at 04:59 PM
Lise: I'm meeting with Mr DeSorbo on Friday morning, so I'm going to hold off and just post one economic development update Friday afternoon after our talk. It just makes more sense. Just wanted to keep you, and everyone else interested in the latest, in the loop! As soon as it goes up on Friday, I'll post the link on here to let everyone know.
Julie Weisberg (Editor) July 16, 2012 at 09:55 PM
Everyone: As promised, I just posted the latest economic update from Mr DeSorbo after our interview on Friday. Here is the link: http://patch.com/A-wfy7
