Old Man Steve's take on the Super Bowl

Bob Fawkes February 4, 2013 at 03:55 pm
Old Man Jacobo's Take on the Super Bowl:
When, in the course of human events, you begin to see bizarre violent "advertising" (Oreo's - a mob of nerds destroying a library; Dorito's - grown men transforming themselves into an insane clown posse of cross-dressers), and when the Circus Maximus of all American bread and circuses, the Super Bowl, is interrupted by an extended power outage, you have to realize that the Imperialist American Empire has finally descended into the bowels of a 4th rate banana republic.
Richard Poulton February 4, 2013 at 04:07 pm
Don't hold anything back there Jacobo. By the way what are your true feelings about America? But did you enjoy the game?
Michael Casteel February 4, 2013 at 04:28 pm
I thought the Doritos ad was funny and clever. Any man who has a daughter and has indulged her desires for Daddy to participate in tea parties and dress up games had to laugh at that commercial. Which of course was a parody taken to extreme.
On the other hand Bouncy's half time stripper act was just plain embarrassing. That should not be on prime time TV. I would have been mortified to be watching that with my daughter. "There is a role model for you sweetie. Maybe someday you can shake your T & A on national TV while wearing skimpy bondage gear." CBS and the NFL should be ashamed. And -as those who know me can attest - I am about as far from being a prude as is possible.

It's okay, Jake. When the US is invaded, it will be during the paroxysm of gluttony and greed we call the Stupor Bowl, and while all good 'Murricans may be clutching their AR-15s, they will be so zombified by the screen spectacle that klonking them on the head and prying the guns from their Cheeto-dusted hands will be trivial.
All the invaders have to do is avoid slipping in the hot wings-flavored drool and spilled Budweiser pooling on the floor.
Howard Smith February 4, 2013 at 05:09 pm
Imperialist American Empire? I don't think so, why not just call out the the boneheads that created what you dislike instead of condemning the USA which has liberated millions worldwide and only ask for enough land to bury our fallen and leave, but only after rebuilding our foes and make them our friends, think Germany, Japan, Korea. Think those people calls us Imperialists? Why would you ever consider being a citizen of such a horrible country when you can leave so easily at anytime?
Bob Fawkes February 4, 2013 at 05:21 pm
@ Richard,
My feeling on America. A noble experiment in freedom and democracy. Things started going awry in the early 19th century with Jackson's temporarily sucessful battles against international bankers, followed post-Civil War carpetbaggers and industrialists oppressing the American people (child labor, no workers compensation, etc...). Plutocrats really came to the forefront with the corrupt 1870's administration of Grant, and they have controlled most all other Presidents and Congresses ever since. American Imperialism caught fire in the 1880's. Waterboarding, for example, was first used by US forces in the Philippines in the 1890's. The final death blow to "American Freedom", I think, occurred in 1944 when Roosevelt's progressive VP Henry Wallace was replaced with the uneducated incompetent racist hayseed stooge Harry S. Truman. The way Truman was placed in the drivers seat is a story unto itself. The entire world has since suffered through a cold war and hundreds of military occupations as a result. Plutocrat bankers and military industrialists have exploited the world's resources and indigeous people ever since. Think how different our nation and our world would been had Henry Wallece, and not Harry Truman, succeeded Roosevelt as President! @ Jim, Yeah. Pretty much as you describe. Turn the power off for a week or three, and see what happens. The boobs will be begging for the army jackboots to "restore order". Careful what you ask for...
Bob Fawkes February 4, 2013 at 05:26 pm
@ Richard,
As for the game itself, close game, down to the very last play. I hope I don't have to see and listen to Ray Lewis crying for the next three weeks...
Richard Poulton February 4, 2013 at 05:27 pm
Thanks Jacobo for the reply. My concern is, as I am sure with anyone else that reads your comments, is that you are not happy living under the flag we have. You continually stomp on the way of life we have but suggest no answer to correct. Yes, I respect your opinions, just allow those of us the same respect when we present ours. If the US of A is so bad why do you stay? Just curious. Enjoy the day.
Bob Fawkes February 4, 2013 at 05:32 pm
@ Howard Smith,
You are seriously deluded if you believe the US "liberated millions worldwide". I recommend you sir, read my February 2013 Book of the Month -- "The Untold History of the United States", by Oliver Stone and Peter Kuznick.
Stephen Austin February 4, 2013 at 05:33 pm
Well.....I not sure what to make of all the stuff you'all post on here, most of which has nothing to do with my take on the Super Bowl.......why.I guess people have to vent and they sure found a place here......sorry Patch

Not your fault, Steve. There are simply a lot of very self-important people on the Patch with way too much time on their hands. They couldn't stay 'on topic' if someone promised them $100.00 because they're just too darn important for such polite nonsense. Keep posting, I enjoy your vid clips very much. You always make me smile.
Bob Fawkes February 4, 2013 at 06:08 pm
@ Richard,
Why do I stay? I stay because history has shown us that independent freedom movements throughout the 20th and early 21st century have been brutally put down by one or the other 900 pound gorilla in the room (the Soviet Union and/or the USA). Any attempt by myself or others, in other nations, to throw off the American Imperial yoke would undoubtedly result in my death or imprisonment, and the boot pressed ever harder on the people's necks. If positive changes are to come about, they must come about from within. As the Soviet experiment failed, the rampant corruption and mismanagement was such that every Soviet citizen eventually came to the point of living day to day, "every man for himself". The black market for all goods flourished.. When the Soviet Union finally collapsed, numerous nations threw off the yoke and declared independence. The same will happen to the USA, in due time. I might as well sit back and watch as it all unfolds... We Americans have a long way to go in this ongoing collapse and my voice here on the Patch and elsewhere hopefully opens up the eyes of some and encourages them to look, listen, independently research, verify, and ultimately to come to their own conclusions. I don't have all the answers, nor do I claim to. I am simply asking Americans to be aware. Aware that the empire is teetering on the brink of collapse. The bread and circuses won't go on forever. Be ready for it when the time comes. Do not ever give up your guns!
Bob Fawkes February 4, 2013 at 06:14 pm
@ LB,
Nothing for you to see here rube. Move along. The next Circus (Daytona 500) is right around the corner. Start planning out your casseroles dishes now...
Richard Poulton February 4, 2013 at 06:20 pm
Steve your are also right. Swayed off topic didn't we. Back to my thoughts on the game. Late in 3rd Q, B.R. had a 3rd & 7. Pass missed target, should had led to 4th and a kick, 49-ers get ball back, and were on a roll. But no, off sides. B.R. get ball back now a 3rd & 2. Pass made it missed, but pass interference called. New downs-story over. Forget the off sides Ravins committed right before lights went out, and the blown foul in the end zone. If, and that is only an if, the earlier 2 mistakes not had happened, 49-er's would have gotten the ball back & may have scored taking the lead and air out of the Raven's. But I enjoyed the game.
IRTURONG February 4, 2013 at 07:03 pm
jerkobo, must be hell to be so enlightened as you are
Bob Fawkes February 4, 2013 at 07:41 pm
Some men you just can't reach. Most actually; as evidenced by the uneducated attacks on myself and others here on the Patch, by you and others. Those men (and women) that are reached, that proceed to think, and to question, and to analyze, and ultimately, to correct grievous wrongs, they are the acorns which will grow into powerful oaks.
Fred February 4, 2013 at 08:06 pm
I am not really a football fan but the game was good, could have lived with out the grunting stripper show at half time though
Flowers February 4, 2013 at 08:15 pm
Well as you can see Steve, you have triggered a firestorm with those Taylor Swift comments. As for Jacobo, he was doing some electrical work down in New Orleans and got zapped. Musta hooked his positive to his negative. He don't mean no harm!
Stephen Austin February 4, 2013 at 08:55 pm
Thank you Flowers ! you always make me laugh with your remarks

I agree that Beyonce's halftime show was both overrated and over the top. But I have a question for everyone out there...if you thought it was so inappropriate why didn't you just change the channel?
Stephen Austin February 5, 2013 at 02:46 pm
I agree with Anthony just change the channel or go clean out the basement
Beth February 5, 2013 at 08:04 pm
I don't know, I must be getting old. Their singing was ok, but it seems their whole performance was predicated on dressing in Victoria Secret and dancing provocatively. The absence of any real talent is appalling. Surely the Super Bowl producers could have come up with someone better than that. I didn't need to change the channel, I wasn't watching Sunday night -- I watched it on YouTube to see what you all were talking about.
Bob Fawkes February 5, 2013 at 10:55 pm
Beth, it wasn't all that bad. 4th rate yes, bad, no. Hell, back in the day even Ed Sullivan had to put on that guy with the twirling dinner plates in a pole (saber dance) in between the Beatles, Doors and Rolling Stones.
Brian C. Duffy February 6, 2013 at 01:01 am
J.A. That is the first thing you said in this thread that has made any sense. Just when I was about to write you off as a total wacko. (You're still on double secret probation though)
jane February 6, 2013 at 01:51 am
Your self assessment might be a bit off. I think you sound very prudish. But maybe I'm just not 'prudish' enough.
Just wondering if you had been watching the game with your son would you have said "Son, now there are some steroid taking million dollar role models for you."?
Flowers February 6, 2013 at 02:02 pm
I love dinner plate spinning! That's real entertainment.
Flowers February 6, 2013 at 02:56 pm
Thanks for the advice Jacobo. I've just about broken all the dinner plates in the house by now.
Chris Griffin February 6, 2013 at 06:09 pm
Because the second half of the Superbowl was on afterwards?!?!?!?!?
I did not watch the whole "show" which is the same as turnign it off. I did not think it was inappropriate. I just thought it sucked.

I had family visit from out of town to attend a Little League game down by the beach. They justRead More loved the entire area, especially the splash pad and the Sandpiper. It made me stop, look around and appreciate how fortunate we are in East Haven to have such a great place for so many activities.
CitizenVoice June 19, 2013 at 12:37 am
I've taken the kids to this for the past 3 years. It is such a great time. Will be there this yearRead More too.

Hi Sam - our events calendar was having technical hiccups this morning so our engineering team hasRead More temporarily disabled it so they can dive in and fix it. I apologize for that, and I will let you know when the calendar is back up and running so you can post. Thank you!!
Lise Cavallaro June 17, 2013 at 09:37 am
I'm disappointed with the new format. Doesn't seem to be very user friendly.
Melissa Simoes June 17, 2013 at 09:06 am
It's probably the same punks who broke into our cars over on Mansfield Grove AGAIN.... the policeRead More think its a bunch of teenagers because they take little things that are not of much value in any cars that arent locked..and are also doing things like slashing tires, etc all over town. They got into my car the same night! Hope you find your scooter
