Easties Girls Softball Opens Season with Win

The middle school team comes back to defeat Branford 12-10.

Opening day for the young ladies of East Haven Junior Middle School ended with a 12-10 victory over the hornets of Branford

With only one day of practice after the final cuts, the Easties took to the field with little to no bonding with each other. Branford opened up the game by scoring three runs in the first inning. The lack of cohesion showed in that inning, and continued for the next three.

Branford looked like a well oiled machine, making all the plays they needed to extend their lead to 8-3, before the Yellowjacks started to sting back.

Timely hitting, with patience at the plate, started to play out as the Easties wore out the Hornets pitcher and took the lead 9-8 in the third inning. The Easties changed pitchers as well. Ireland Miessau came in to change things up, and went four innings, letting up just two runs and racking up an impressive 11 strikeouts.

The combination of Giovanna Russo (catcher) and Allison Luzzi (shortstop) stopped the Hornets running game by throwing out four of five steal attempts.

The game was all tied up at 10 going into the bottom half of the sixth inning. Gabby Lamberti lead off with a base hit and advanced to second on a passed ball. Giovanna Russo hit a double to the outfield, which scored Gabby for the go-ahead run. Giovanna scored on and error to make the final score 12-10.

Ireland Miessau closed the door on the Hornets by striking out the side to end the game. The win puts the Easties' record at 1-0, while Branford falls to 0-1.
