Whiz Kid: Sofia (Sofie) Fiorillo

Name: Sofia Fiorillo

Age: 11 

School: , Grade Five

Accomplishment: Sofia Fiorillo recently ‘stepped up’ from the fifth grade at Tuttle School and will be attending JMMS as a sixth grader in the fall.  She was nominated as a Whiz Kid by her teacher, Alice Cleto. Cleto feels that “Sophia is a very trustworthy young lady. She is always challenging herself and strides to do her best. Sofia was one of the best students in my math class this year.”

Family: When it comes to family, she loves sharing time with her twin sister Makenzie, and her three older brothers, Noah (13), Niko (17), and Richard who is 19.  “Sofie is the apple of her brother Richard’s eye, he loves spending time with her as much as she loves being with him” said her mom, Toni. “We also have an extended family, and Sofia is very close to her step sisters, Katelynn and Hailey Onorato, they are the best of friends, you’d think they have been sisters all of their lives.”

Activities: This little lady also loves sports. She enjoys playing basketball, and taking gymnastics classes. Sophie has been a member of EHYC (East Haven Youth Cheerleading) since first grade, and will continue in her sixth season this fall. This year in addition to cheering for EHYC, she will be moving up to a competitive cheer squad, doing half year program with “Spirit Zone” out of Hamden. “She has been taking tumbling classes there for the last few months that she absolutely loves said her mom, and decided to take it further by joining the cheer squad and perfecting what she has learned.”

Other Interests: In her spare time, Sofie loves to read. Her favorite book so far is Big Nate. She loves spending time at the library in town as well, and can never get enough of reading.

Future Plans: Sofia would like to become a medical doctor when she grows up. She loves helping people and would like to make more people feel better. Sofie also aspires to become a professional cheerleader  and balance a sporting career with medicine.

Accomplishments: Sofie was awarded an honors certificate from Cleto at Tuttle this year for her excellence in spelling, having received straight “A’s”, all year long in that class, but most prestigiously was awarded The Superintendent’s Award from Anthony Serio, and got to enjoy a lunch with him.

Key to Awesomeness: “I love to challenge myself, said Sofia.  "That’s a key to awesomeness.”  Her mom believes that Sofie’s key is her great spirit.

“She definitely has a purpose on this earth, she’s meant to be here, and she brightens everyone’s day, and keeps us all laughing for sure” Toni said of her daughter. “She’s a wonderful child with a big heart and a great sense of humor” she added.
