Varsity Soccer: East Haven Suffers Tough Loss to Hamden

Yellow Jackets lose 8-1 to division leading Hamden Thursday night.

East Haven High Boys Varsity Soccer team lost 8-1 against the Quinnipiac Division-leading Hamden High School Thursday.

Hamden’s first half goals came quickly, as Alex Zapata worked his way through the East Haven backfielders to score. Moments later, Zapata assisted Austin Tomin, who scored the second.

Tomin, in turn, set up Jason Durnin for goal number three. Zapata’s next goal came by flipping the ball over the East Haven goalkeeper’s head. Durnin followed the pattern, assisting the fifth goal with a pass to Luis Sandoval for his first of the season.

Hamden's sixth gaol came moments before halftime, on a corner kick from Austin Tomin. Hamden backfielders Noah Leone and Bobby Foster took up forward positions in the box. Tomin’s left footed kick curled inward from the goal line as Leone ascended, heading the ball sharply into the right net.

In the second half, Alan Braun took to the net a perfect give-and-go assist from Alejandro Perez for a score of 7-0.

Shortly after the following kickoff, East Haven launched its second shot of the game, a 35-yard bomb to break the shutout at 7-1.

The final goal came from Hamden midfielder Keegan Etter on a breakaway sprint to finalize the score at 8-1, mirroring Hamden’s 8-1 record for the season, after notching a seventh victory at Foran last Friday.

East Haven will next play Branford at home on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6:15 p.m.
