These Lions Can Read

The kids - or lions - at D.C. Moore read for 71,046 minutes during May in compliance with a reading program called "Roaring to Read."

Students at D.C. Moore just completed a reading program for the month of May called “Roaring to Read,” which served as a kickoff to Governor Malloy’s statewide Summer Reading Program.

A total of 166 children from the school read the sum of 71,046 minutes during the month of May.

The kids at D.C. Moore range from pre-k through second grade. Principal Jackie Bacon and reading specialist Heather Mastracchio spearheaded the program.

“The school’s mascot is a lion and that’s how we came up with the theme,” said Bacon.

Each student was required to read 15 minutes per night, record the name of the book they were reading and the time that they read. Every Tuesday, the data was collected and the children received a new sheet for the upcoming week. Parents also shared in reading to their children and a majority of the kids read far more than the required 15 minutes each night.

Weekly, the kids were recognized for reading the most minutes and for which class had the highest number of participants. A huge, colorful graph hangs in the foyer at D.C. Moore, charting each week of May.

On Wednesday, the children were recognized in an assembly at the school.  Each one received a “Principal’s Shining Star” certificate and a “Reading Star Ribbon.”

“The children were so excited with their accomplishments and were amazed by the total number of minutes they all read,” said Mastracchio.

Congratulations to all of the fine, young readers at D.C. Moore for a job well done and using your “smarticles.”
