Smart Moves: East Haven 6th Graders Have Fun Getting Fit [VIDEO]

Sixth graders from East Haven Academy and Joseph Melillo Middle School are wrapping up their participation in a special 8-week after school physical fitness program at the YMCA in Branford.

Over the last several weeks a group of East Haven sixth grade students have been finding a fun and smart way to get and stay physically fit.

The students, who attend East Haven Academy and Joseph Melillo Middle School, are taking part in a special after-school program at the YMCA in Branford called "Smart Moves."

The program runs for eight weeks and started on Feb. 4.

"We were contacted by Rita Foster at the East Shore Health Department to see if we would like to begin this program in our schools,"  Meaghan Montabana, the health and physical education teacher at the academy, told East Haven Patch.

Montabana said the students are transported to the Soundview YMCA in Branford after school and they then have two separate 45 minutes to 1 hour sessions of health and physical activity.

She noted that the students will use all aspects of the Y in this program.

Additionally, the family of each of the students chosen for the program also receive a free three-month Family Membership to the Y, Montabana said.

"It is an amazing opportunity for our students an their families and we are thrilled that the East Shore Health Department an the Soundview YMCA in Branford have chosen East Haven to be part of this program," she said.
