School's Out -- June 28? June 30?

Figuring out when school will conclude this year means guesstimating when it will stop snowing.

Updated: 11 a.m.

With seven snow days -- and counting -- school officials scrambled Monday to figure out how they'd be made up to meet the state mandate of 180 days -- to total at least 900 hours -- of school a year. As it stands now, the last day of school is June 28.

After batting around ideas, such as whether to scrap the February or April school vacation and/or to extend the calendar year to June 30, the Board of Education looked to School Superintendent Anthony Serio for help.

Serio suggested not taking away from either vacation week but, if needed, to extend the  school year another two days to June 30, which aligns with the language in the teachers' contract. If there are two or more additional snow days, the April vacation week would be shortened.

Also May 6, scheduled as a professional day, would be a regular school day.

The board unanimously agreed on all of the above.
