Regular School Day Added to District Calendar

A former teacher development day, Jan. 25 will now be a regular school day to keep district calendar in line after late start due to Tropical Storm Irene.

To keep the rest of the school calendar on track after the district's late start last month after Tropical Storm Irene, the East Haven Board of Education decided to make Jan. 25 a regular school day.

The day had originally been scheduled as a teacher development day for staff. But Superintendent of Schools Anthony Serio told board members at their meeting on Tuesday the change was needed to keep the rest of the school calendar in line.

School board members unanimously voted to approve the change at Tuesday's meeting.

The district had been scheduled to have its first day of school on Sept. 1, but opened its doors to students on Sept. 6.

Serio noted that teachers had had a development day during this time period last month that allowed the district to make the Jan. 25 change, as although students were not in school from Sept. 1-6, most staff members were in their classrooms.

Serio added that the change would also provide the district with four-day cusion for snow days this winter before any future changes would be needed to the school calendar to maintain the required number of regular instructional days.

Connecticut Genereal Statutes require districts have 180 regular instruction days each school year.
