Public Schools Present Their Strategic Plan Through 2018

Their mission is to 'provide a variety of learning experiences and a rigorous comprehensive education in a safe and nurturing environment to prepare all students to be college and career ready.'

Recently, administrators in the East Haven Public Schools presented their first five-year strategic plan of action for the district to the town's Board of Education.

Here are some of the highlights of the presentation which consisted of 26 different goals, their objectives, and the action plan items necessary to achieve the goals.

Here are several of the goals of the strategic plan:

  • create a balanced system of assessment practices that supports students' achievement of rigorous standards.
  • have safe, secure and maintained buildings
  • embrace culturally-responsive behavior as a school community
  • have equitable access to technology devices
  • improve the ability to model instruction and display student work
  • improve the quality and depth of data reported to parents about student achievement
  • increase efficiency, better communication to all users and transparency of budget within the district payroll system
  • effectively manage grants throughout the district, maximizing their revenue
  • institute a cost reduction through green practices

Here's a sampling of some of the action items needed to achieve the district's strategic plan goals:
  • recruit and commit 1-2 interns per building for high quality teacher/instructional coverage
  • develop a timeline for curriculum review and revision cycle for all content areas
  • re-establish elementary Library Media program through the hiring of three media specialists

  • provide a variety of supplemental and enriching activities that extend beyond the curriculum at all school such as field trips, assemblies, guest speakers
  • provide before and after school programs and activities including after-school transportation
  • develop professional learning communities including Pre-K through 12 vertical teams in math and literacy
  • develop a district-wide assessment schedule in alignment with curriculum and articulated standards within each unit
  • complete a comprehensive facility and grounds study, with consideration for school configuration, relocation, consolidation and expansion of programs; conduct feasibility study on existing school properties to determine future use
  • revise and revisit board policy concerning crisis response, school safety and maintenance protocol
  • plan and hold district events that promote dialogue between town officials, community representatives, Board of Education and the schools
  • define process for staff and students for confidential reporting of bullying and harassement issues
