Lighting Improvements Happening at Overbrook Elementary

Parents and other community members were up in arms over the conditions at the Overbrook Elementary School where kids found inappropriate materials on their playground.

Whether in direct response to the recent news-making discovery of a hypodermic needle and a pornographic magazine found by children on the playground of their school, improvements to the exterior lighting were being made Sept. 26.

An East Haven Patch reader sent us this photo of an United Illuminating truck with workers who appeared to be repairing broken lights and replacing old lighting with new fixtures on the grounds of the school.

One of the commenters on the Patch article about the hypodermic needle said this about the lighting:

"Also at that meeting it was suggested by the parents to have some lighting installed at the school to help prevent this situation. I believe the answer to that was it was to expensive. The UI has a program called light up the night which costs say a hundred dollars per month per light. This will keep the area well lit and act as a deterrent and also keep the property which the taxpayers own free from vandals. At that meeting one of the parents also said they went to the mayor. You know that went nowhere."

Better lighting is a step in the right direction. What else do you feel needs to be done to improve the safety at the school?
