She was nominated as an East Haven Patch "Whiz Kid" by her proud principal, Bill Grimm.

Although Grimm said he adores all of his students, McKayla is just one of those "special ones" that stands out for him.

"This child always comes to school ready to do her best, and is on top of everything she does. Her respect for classmates and the adults at Deer Run is always there, everyday,” Grimm said.

This young lady, who mom and dad call “Mickey,” is the daughter of Sarah and Geremiah Wheeler of East Haven. She has three younger brothers, Gavin and Chase, who are 5 year-old twins, and the youngest is baby brother, Rhys, 1.

Activities:

McKayla enjoys karate, baseball and swimming. “Mickey would never leave a pool, ocean or bath if we didn’t drag her out," Sarah Wheeler said. "Mickey also loves running around and being a real kid at the park and the playground.”

McKayla also loves spending play time with the family’s pet cat, Stripes.

Other Interests:

McKayla has a passion for reading. Her favorite subject in school is science, and the more she reads about it, the more she wants to learn.

“When it comes to family, she loves taking care of her baby brother and spending time with her aunts and uncles," Sarah Wheeler said. "Most of all, she enjoys spending ’girl time’ with me, her aunts and her grandmothers without the boys around.”

Future Plans:

“I want to work at Dunkin’ Donuts when I’m old enough. And when I grow up, I want to be a veterinarian because I love animals and would like to help them,” McKayla said.

Accomplishments:

Beside being an amazing big sister to her three younger brothers, she has received school awards for reading and ‘AWANA’ at Vacation Bible School, where she attends bible study once each week during the school year under the direction of East Haven teacher, John Clifford. AWANA awards are for reciting and remembering her verses.

Key to Awesomeness:

Grimm said he feels that McKayla’s key to awesomeness is always being prepared for school and being ready to learn new things. Geremiah thinks his daughter’s love of reading and enjoyment in learning are her biggest assets, while mom chimed in that “Mickey loves to help others and make sure that everyone around her is taken care of.”
