Asa Myers Reaching for the Stars

The 8-year-old aspires to be an architect or engineer.

Asa Myers recently "stepped up" from second grade at Deer Run School and will be attending Ferrara School as a third grader in the fall. The 8-year-old is looking forward to riding the bus with his sister.

The son of Lauren and Rick Myers of East Haven, Asa has an older sister, Taylor, who will be a fifth-grader at Ferrara this fall. Also residing in the Myers’ household is the family cat, Julian, a 20-pound furry ball of fun.

“Asa got his name from his great-great grandfather on his dad’s side that died in the Halifax Explosion in Nova Scotia. His dad and his grandfather use ‘Asa’ as their middle name,” his mom, Lauren, said.

This young man was nominated by Deer Run principal Bill Grimm as an East Haven Patch Whiz Kid.

“Asa is a delightful boy, who always comes to school with a smile on his face willing to learn. He’s very respectful of all of the adults at school and also to his classmates and other students,” Grimm said.

Activities:

Asa loves sports. He has played Biddy Basketball, and been a key player on teams at Momauguin Recreation for four years. This September, he will be entering another year of Cub Scouts at Pack 412, where he will be a "Bear."

Asa and his sister have begun a collection of all of the quarters of the 50 states. Mom joked that “Asa now has to pay Taylor to see the collection.”

Other Interests:

“Asa is an all-around kid," Lauren said. "He loves fishing, camping, swimming and traveling with his family.”

In his spare time, Asa loves to read, create things with Legos and is interested in trains - from reading about them and collecting them, to playing with them and visiting museums that feature trains.

Bike riding and selling lemonade in the neighborhood with his sister are also favorite things for Asa.

Future Plans:

When Asa graduates high school, he aspires to go on to an engineering college and get a degree in the engineering field so that he can design tall buildings and skyscrapers.

Accomplishments:

Recently, Asa was awarded by U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-3) for his reading achievements. And his teacher, Ms. King, also rewarded him after he racked up more than 60 hours of reading for a class project.

Key to Awesomeness:

In his own words, Asa said, “I am kind to other people. I help others out as much as I can, and at home I do my chores - that’s what makes me awesome.”

Lauren had much to say about her son and what makes him awesome, too.

“My son is kind-hearted. He is very intuitive, always questioning things because of his desire to learn. He has a very kind spirit, and he is always thinking,” she said. “He’s like a sponge that just takes everything in. His vocabulary is exceptional for a boy his age, and he always thinks before speaking. He also get great report cards.”
