Celebrate 'Take your Child to the Library Day' Saturday!

Celebrate "Take your Child to the Library Day" at Hagaman Memorial Library. Dragon stories and crafts, cupcakes and live music. Everyone is invited!

Some of you know that before I found my true calling – being your children’s librarian – I wandered all over the world planning meetings and conventions for more than twenty years. While working on every continent but Antarctica, I met kind, helpful, fascinating people wherever I would go, from Argentina and Australia to the former Yugoslavia (I haven’t visited a Z country yet).

Here at Hagaman Memorial Library, we are privileged to meet wonderful people and families every day. In a typical week, we might welcome children to our programs whose parents were born in Japan, Egypt, Iran, Haiti, India, Colombia, Pakistan, Ecuador, Germany, Jamaica, France (these are just a few faces springing to mind) and of course, our children whose grandparents or great-grandparents or great-great grandparents were born in Italy, Ireland, Poland, England, Russia (like my own) and so many other places.  And I’m reminded of one thing: how lucky we are to be in East Haven on this beautiful day. I’m from CT (Terryville - have you heard of it?) and I love East Haven.

As we go through these challenging times, please remind yourselves of all the great things in our town: our beautiful shoreline, great restaurants, friendly neighbors, and of course, our library, where World War II veterans meet each month, where books are passionately discussed, where Judge DeMayo runs the most fascinating stamp club anywhere, where free movies and pizza are a common occurrence, where volunteers provide free tax and legal assistance, where music from throughout the world is performed, where babies and toddlers learn skills that will help them succeed and excel in school, and so much more.

This Saturday, February 4, is the first annual “Take your Child to the Library Day” statewide and beyond. Hagaman Memorial Library is celebrating with dragon stories and crafts starting at 2 p.m. Sugar Bakery and an anonymous donor have sweetened the proposition by donating delicious award-winning cupcakes. Fran Block and Dan Gardella have volunteered to play live music. Everyone is invited to participate. Whether you are a library regular or have never stepped foot inside, you know where we are – 227 Main Street! You will be welcomed by smiling faces.

Join us to make this a celebration worthy of a town that is learning and growing and will get better every day if we’re kind to one another. Thank you!
