Why are Some Stop Signs in East Haven So High?

A reader wants to know why the some stop signs in town are much higher than others. We're working on the answer but can use your help.

It started as an innocent question that we here at East Haven Patch are sure you’ve been asking yourself too: “Why are some stop signs soo [SIC] high you can barely see them?”

Via East Haven Patch Facebook, Lauren Monaco asked why several stop signs at the intersection of Thompson Avenue and Dodge Street are so high?

After trekking out to snap some photos of these high-in-the-sky-signs, we started calling around to find the answer. Turns out East Haven town officials are just as stumped as readers.

The Public Services Department sent us over to the East Haven Police Traffic Maintenance Department. An employee there said he’s been with the town several years and he’s not sure why the stop signs are so tall. “I do recognize that,’ he said of their apparent extra tall height. ‘It looks like eight feet to the bottom.’

Why, he said, “I’m not sure.”

The next call was to the Planning and Zoning Department. Were the stop sings part of a larger infrastructure project, perhaps installed in relation to the nearby airport project?

Frank Biancur, Jr. in P&Z said he is not sure. His department, he said, does not regulate stop signs.

Over to the mayor’s office – Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr. was out when we called – and still no answer.

In related news, Interplex Solar, an East Haven business recently donated a solar stop sign at Forbes Place and Kimberly Avenue – read all about it in the East Haven Courier last week and on their website.

Patch isn’t done finding the answer yet but we’d like your help too. Why are the stop signs at Thompson and Dodge so tall?
