This Week: East Haven's Town Budget Review Process Begins

The Town of East Haven kicks of its 2013-14 budget season, with the Board of Finance beginning its series of workshops reviewing Mayor Maturo's initial proposed spending plan this week.

Instead, today is the deadline date the mayor is required by town charter to submit his proposed budget to the finance board. The mayor passed along his plan to the board on Friday. The town's budget process is about to shift into high gear, with East Haven Board of Finance beginning its review East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr's inital proposed spending plan for the 2013-14 fiscal year this week.

Maturo Jr submitted his initial proposed 2013-14 town budget to the Board of Finance on Friday.

Board of Finance Review

Over the next several days, the Board of Finance will conduct workshops to review the mayor's budget proposal.

The finance board cannot make cuts or changes in budget proposals, but members do pass along their recommendations to the mayor prior to its finalization.

The draft schedule for those workshops is attached as a PDF to this post. The workshops will take place in the Mario Giaimo meeting room in the lower level of Town Hall

However, according to the finalized BOF workshop schedule, all meetings will start at 6:30 p.m., and not 7 p.m. as stated on the draft schedule.

The board is scheduled to return the proposed budget to the mayor, with its recommendations, on March 20. From there, the mayor will then submit his final recommended 2013-14 budget proposal to the East Haven Town Council.

Town Council Review

Maturo must submit his budget to the town council by March 31 as mandated by the East Haven Town Charter.

Town Council members will then begin their review of the proposed budget on the way to its final approval.

According to the agenda for the council's meeting this Tuesday, members are expected to set and hold a public hearing on the board of education portion of the budget April 16 and a public hearing on the general government portion of the budget on April 17.

The Town Council is also expected to discuss the board's upcoming budget workshop schedule this Tuesday's evening, according to the meeting's agenda, which is attached to this post as a PDF.

The town charter mandates the council set and approve the final budget by April 28.
