Showers, Thunderstorms Expected; May Produce Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds

Severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 2 p.m. Monday. Most of the rest of the week looks like showers on and off.

Metro-North Railroad is reporting the "New Haven Line Service is currently experiencing delays of 10 to 15 minutes due to wire damage in the vicinity of Southport."

There currently are no reported power outages in East Haven, according to United Illuminating's outage map. There are a scattering of outages in Hamden and West Haven, but nothing significant at this time.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 2 p.m. Monday, the National Weather Service says.

"A cold front will pass through the region today, resulting in widespread showers and thunder storms. A few storms may be strong to marginally severe, with strong wind gusts as the main threat. Heavy rain, with totals between 3/4 and a little over 1 inch is expected. Localized areas may see higher amounts in a short period of time that could result in possible urban flooding. Isolated flash flooding will be possible as well," the NWS says.

At 6:49 a.m., the NWS was reporting a line of strong thunderstorms affecting Fairfield, Putnam, Westchester, and Western New Haven counties, moving east at 35 mph.

"Winds of up to 40 mph are expected with these storms. In addition, very heavy reain is occurring with these storms. This could cause ponding of water on roadways and minor flooding of poor drainage areas."

The NWS also issued this reminder: "Lightning is one of nature's number one killers. Remember, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck by lightning. Move to safe shelter immediately."

For the rest of the week, the NWS says, there is the possibility of showers and thunderstorms on and off.

The forecast for the shoreline is as follows:

Overnight: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 4 a.m. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds and heavy rain. Cloudy, with a low around 66. Southwest wind around 6 m.p.h. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Monday: Showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. High near 71. South wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Monday Night: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 1am, then a slight chance of showers after 3am. Some of the storms could produce small hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. North wind between 6 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

Tuesday: A chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 74. North wind between 10 and 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Tuesday Night: A slight chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. North wind between 6 and 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday: A slight chance of showers. Partly sunny, with a high near 76. Chance of precipitation is 20%.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 61.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 78.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 63.

Friday: A chance of showers. Mostly sunny, with a high near 81. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday Night: A chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 67. Chance of precipitation is 30%.
