The East Haven Board of Education voted 6-2, with Chairman Nicholas Palladino abstaining, to approve a one-year contract extension with a 2 percent pay increase for Superintendent of Schools Anthony Serio following an 80-minute executive session at last night's regularly scheduled meeting.
Christine Maisano and Patricia DePalma voted against the extension, stating they both felt it was "time for a change."
"I do believe he's done a reputable job, but sometimes I think there's time for a change," Maisano said prior to the vote.
DePalma agreed.
"I think 37 years, there's something to be said for that," DePalma said, referring to Serio's tenure with the school district.
"I just think it's time for a change for East Haven," she said.
Palladino said he was abstaining from the vote on the superintedent's contract due to the fact that he works with the Serio's son, Anthony Serio Jr., at his place of employment, Giordano Associates.
In addition, the school board also unanimously approved a one-year contract extension and 2 percent pay increase for Assistant Superintdent Erica Forti.
Although details of the new contract were not immediately available after last night's meeting, according to signed Oct. 11, 2006, and extended to Aug. 31, 2011, the superintendent's salary was set at $147,829 for the 2009 fiscal year.
In addition, Serio receives $10,800 a year in supplemental income (for such things as before- and after-school meetings, dinner/fundraisers) and annual longevity pay of $8,500.
plus supplemental income of $6,300 and longevity of $6,000 a year.
East Haven Patch will provide an update as more information is available about the new contract extentions.
Dont forget, Police Chief Gallo is still on paid leave. I believe the tab on that one is up to $300,000.
election? Not a peep from him. Almost like there no election at all this year. Mr. Lou gone underground? Looks like East Haven is now a one party town. Republicans folded up the tent and gone home from the circus. Not good at all. Need a two party system for democracy to kind of work. Where's Mr. Dan? No more watch dog in town either. Whats to come of us.
