Path Cleared for Shoreline Trail Improvements

Boy Scouts will do the work as part of their Eagle Scout project.

Improvements for the Shoreline Greenway Trail in East Haven are moving forward.

The green light - a unanimous approval - came at the Town Council’s meeting Tuesday, after the council heard a presentation by Barbara Brow, the chairman of the Shoreline Greenway Trail Committee.

The work will include fencing around the parking lot at the trailhead at Mansfield Grove Road and Hoop Pole Lane, an informational kiosk to provide a guide for hikers, and barrier bollards to keep motorized vehicles off the trail.

Brow said the work would be done by local Boy Scouts for their Eagle Scout projects. Materials will be purchased by the trail committee at no cost to the town, she said.

The Shoreline Greenway Trail is a 25-mile recreational trail for hikers, bicyclists and runners that stretches from Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven, through East Haven, Branford and Guilford, to Hammonasset State Park in Madison.

Councilman Joseph Santino (D-2) asked about the fencing. Brow said it would be compatible with fencing used by residents of that shoreline area neighborhood.

Most comments about the project were favorable.

"I think it’s a great thing the Greenway Trail is doing there," said Dan McCann, a local blogger.

McCann asked if extra lighting could be installed to discourage people from congregating at the trailhead after dark. Brow said the trail committee doesn’t have funding for that, but the Police Department is keeping an eye on the area.

The project previously received a favorable recommendation in June by the Planning & Zoning Commission.

"I can’t wait to see the Boy Scouts attack that with their usual vigor," said Town Council Chairman James Dougherty.
