Mayor Receives 2000 Tacos, Soup Kitchen Stocked

Mayor Joseph Maturo was the recipient of a smorgasbord of Mexican food after his statement about having tacos went national.

On it's Facebook page, Reform Immigration for America posted this statement:

Tonight, thousands of Latinos in East Haven, CT, will know they're no longer alone. People--this Facebook community--from around the country support them.

Thousands of you texted in over the past day and a half to send Mayor Maturo a message: his insensitive comments about an already-abused Latino community will NOT be tolerated.

500 tacos were delivered to the mayor (and then to a soup kitchen) and, for every other text-a-taco we received, we'll host a community dinner and invite the mayor to start a real conversation about issues impacting his city.

A national organization hoping to reform the United States’ immigration policy had a special delivery for Mayor Joseph Maturo on Thursday: 2,000 tacos, all sent to .

The tacos were sent after Maturo made headlines when asked what he’d do that night to support the Latino community in light of allegations that the police department illegally targeting Latinos.

“I might have tacos when I go home, I'm not quite sure yet,”  on Tuesday.

The comment made headlines across the country, and Maturo . Matruro says a campaign started by Reform Immigration for America sent the tacos.

In a statement, Maturo said all the tacos were donated to a soup kitchen in New Haven.

"The abundance of tacos that we received today underscores the importance of the issues currently facing the Town of East Haven and highlights the need for the Town to continue the process of healing and reform that I initiated immediately upon taking office through the efforts of the Town’s newly constituted ," he said in the statement.

"The events of the past few days have focused our Town, and my administration, on the need to deal sensitively and compassionately with the challenges currently facing our Town.  We will continue to address those challenges while also striving to provide the services our residents have come to expect.”
