Mayor Capone Leads Challengers in Campaign Funding

Compared to Republicans John Finkle and Joe Maturo, the incumbent mayor is leading the pack when it comes to money.

If the mayoral race were decided solely by dollars, April Capone would have her third term guaranteed. In the latest campaign finance report, the incumbent boasts far more money raised – and a lot more cash on hand – than her Republican challengers.

In the July report, the “Friends of Mayor April” committee had $56,335 of cash on hand. Joe Maturo, the former mayor hoping to win the office again, has $668, while John Finkle, the former Board of Education chairman, has $7,083 remaining.

Compared to her competitors, Capone garnered a number of $1,000 donations from individuals in town, in addition to funds from special interest groups.

The Robinson & Cole law firm gave her $1,000, AT&T Connecticut employees donated $1,500, and the union Bricklayers & Allied Craftworkers Local 1 gave $500. No political action committees have yet to donate to the Republican candidates.

One of the biggest expenditures for the candidates has been polls. Finkle paid out $4,750 to conduct a campaign poll, while Mautro’s campaign paid out $2,500. Capone’s biggest expenditures were a pair of $3,000 fundraisers.
