Maturo: Annual Town Audit Reports Fiscal Year Surplus for East Haven [DOCS]

East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr. announced the town received the official audit for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, which reports a surplus of $237,000 for the 2011-12 fiscal year.

The following is a press release from the East Haven Mayor's Office.

Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr. announced today that the Town received the official audit for the 2011-2012 fiscal year, which confirms that the Town ran a surplus of $237,000.00 for the past fiscal year and reduced its long-term debt by almost $3.6 million dollars.

Maturo explained, “I am proud that my team and I were able to cut spending, reduce borrowing, and produce a surplus for the people of East Haven.”

According to the audit, the Town had total revenues of $85,313,750.00 and total expenditures of $85,089,676.00.  The Town also saw a small positive transfer of $12,969.00.  The end result was a yearly surplus of $224,074.00.

As a result of the yearly surplus, the Town’s running fund balance, or rainy day fund, increased from $200,800.00 to $437,843.00.

Maturo continued, “After just one year in office, we managed to reduce our long term debt by 7.5%.  Further, despite several budget irregularities created under the previous administration, including shortages in accounts for water, natural gas, sewer use, unemployment, and retirement payouts, the Town ran a surplus and doubled its rainy-day fund – known as the fund balance.”

Just eleven days after taking office, Maturo initiated a town-wide spending freeze, which continued for seven months through June of 2012.

Maturo explained, “Immediately upon coming into office, we worked to reduce unnecessary spending and increase revenue. The Town accomplished both goals, as it also saw an increase in revenue from delinquent tax collection.  These decisions contributed significantly to the Town’s surplus.”

According to the audit, the Town maintains a credit rating of A3 from Moody’s, a rating which the Mayor would like to see improve.

Maturo explained, “Like any individual, the Town has a credit rating, which had slipped to a ‘Baa1” grade, or ‘non-investment grade,’ between 2008 and 2010.  Our reduction of long-term debt will help us make a case for a better credit rating, which will save our residents money if we look to borrow in the future.”

Maturo concluded, “As a result of our efforts to limit spending and reduce our debt, we have begun to put East Haven back on the right track. Moving forward, we will continue to practice common sense budgeting so that we can build a better, brighter, and more financially stable community for years to come.”

Your anger consumes you and clouds your mind with confusion, Mr. Jones. You lash out with slurs and unfounded accusations at anyone and everyone who dares to question the marble mouth. I pity you, the town bully and lapdog fool. The town and the world laugh at you and your clown mayor and still you refuse to see it..

@ Luigi (the original) "CA" Jones,
You have many, many issues, not the least of which is your inability to correctly identify me. Thereby you continue to "accuse" me of being so and so... Does it matter who I am? Do you actually feel threatened by an internet blogger? Is your livlihood threatened? What is your problem or beef with me? Let's get it out in the open here, since you feel fit to attack upon any and all comment I post online. Tell us all, what's troubling you? Maybe we can help....

Good job on paying the bills and holding the spending..
DonnaR January 5, 2013 at 10:21 pm
Now for Joko
No one really cares who you are. It is clear that you have an agenda that is inconsistent with the good of the town. No one of your comments has anything to,do with the article. One current issue that popped up at a special meeting of the finance board this week was a request to spend money 35,000 for a feasibility study on the cost rehabbing the old high school. Why would we do this when the Board Of Education will not have its 5 year plan ready until June at best.. If the BOE doesn't need the building no state or fed funding would be available to offset the cost of rehab. I am sure this will come up at the next town council meeting should anyone actually care and be willing to do more than just spout off as a faceless, nameless bafoon

WE THE PEOPLE have no say in how governments govern nor how OUR money is spent. WE supposedly electRead More people who take the trust of the people with them when elected and do the will of WE THE PEOPLE. This has never happened. Especially in state and federal office. Once in office the power they discover they now have pushes aside the will of the people. It an attitude of we have the power and you don't. Someday, but I doubt it, we can elect those who will not loose site of why they were elected.
