LETTER: Town Should Pay Clerks for Cancelled Meetings

East Haven American Disability Act Committee Chairman questions a memorandum from Director of Administration and Management Arthur L. DeSorbo regarding a new policy that mandates no longer paying board, commission clerks for cancelled meetings.

(Editor's note: The memorandum Mr. Hoff is referring to in his letter below is posted in the gallery that accompanies this article.)

Past practice states that when there was a meeting even if the meeting was canceled the clerk for that committee would still receive compensation for duties performed, due to the fact that it is indeed the clerk of the committee that files the Agenda for the meetings to be held in the first place with , and mails a copy of the Agenda to the various committee members.

If a meeting were to be canceled, the clerk of the committee would also be responsible for filing the cancellation notice.

Therefore, I personally feel that this Memorandum, and what is being asked to be done in it, is improper as the Clerks would still have to perform their duties.

To have someone, regardless if it be a Clerk or whatever other position they may hold within a company, enter into a agreement as was set forth by past practice and not receive compensation is indeed Theft of Services.

If indeed the clerks of the committees have performed their duties they indeed deserve to be rightfully compensated.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Robert D.Hoff,
