Facebook Pages Support, Criticize East Haven Mayor

And an immigration reform group has organized a cell phone texting campaign to send orders of tacos to East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. office.

It took less than 24 hours for East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo's comment that he for dinner to support the Latino community in the wake of the of four officers for alleged civil rights violations to become a national news story.

Since then — in addition to East Haven Patch and other more traditional news outlets such as newspapers, cable television and radio shows — countless Americans have also taken to Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites to discuss and publicly share their thoughts about Maturo's r Mario Diaz Tuesday.

Facebook Campaigns

And over the last several hours two Facebook pages have been created related to the controversy: one calling for Maturo's resignation and the other allowing people to show their support for the embattled East Haven mayor.

Late this morning, East Haven Taxpayers Supporting Mayor Maturo had more than 45 "likes." And East Haven Taxpayers Calling For Mayor Maturo to Resign had more then 670 "likes."

By "liking" a Facebook page, users are subscribed to the page's status updates and posts.

On both pages, users have posted comments showing their support for the mayor or their disapproval.

Taco Texts

In addition to the social media campagns, Reform Immigration for America is protesting the mayor's comments by organizing a campaign to send orders of tacos to the East Haven Mayor's Office this week.

The group is asking its supporters and others who found Maturo's taco remark offensive to text "TACO" to the phone number 69866 to send a taco to Mayor Maturo’s office this week.

The group said it will send an order for each text it receives.

Let’s show him we won’t stand for racial profiling and public displays of ignorance by our elected officials," the organization states on its blog.
