East Haven Strengthens Town Blight Ordinance

The policy would crack down on people who damage the sidewalks in front of their homes, according to the New Haven Register.

Monday night, the East Haven Town Council voted to crack down on people who do not upkeep their homes, or damage the sidewalks in front of their property, according to the New Haven Register.

Monday night, the council agreed to revise its blight ordinance, according to the Register. Specifically, property owners will now be liable if they damage the sidewalks in front of their property, and the town can now order banks to maintain properties that have fallen under foreclosure, according to the Register.

It’s a big problem,” East Haven Assistant Town Attorney Alfred Zullo told the Register. “We want to be able to have uniform plans for every property to make sure the town is reimbursed.”

Now, if a property owner damages the sidewalk in front of their home and the town has to fix it, a lien will be put on their home, according to the article. Common problems includes over-salting or driving heavy machinery over the sidewalk, according to the article.
