East Haven Home to New GE Solar-Powered Electric Vehicle Carport

The Fairfield-based company confirms through a Twitter page update that it has installed the new vehicle recharging station at Town Hall.

What is that new, strange little structure that recently sprang up in the East Haven Town Hall parking lot? Oh, it's nothing — just a state-of-the-art General Electric Vehicle Solar Carport Station.

Although there's no official confirmation yet from Mayor April Capone's Office, GE Industrial's Twitter account posted an update earlier today publicly announcing their involvement in the East Haven Town Hall recharging station project.

GE opened its first experimental station in Plainville earlier this year. And it appears that it has now expanded that field with a new station in East Haven.

According to a May 26 press release on the company's website, GE's new solar carport is "one of the most expansive undertakings of its type in North America."

And the Fairfield-based company says the new EV (or electric vehicle) charging stations produce "the energy equivalent to power 20 homes per year."

"According to the Electric Drive Transportation Association, more than half of American drivers today travel less than 30 miles in a typical day and more than 75 percent travel less than 60 miles," company officials state in the release. "EVs with a range of 50-100 miles could easily meet the daily needs of most customers."

East Haven Patch will continue to update this story as more information about the new East Haven recharging station and its functionality becomes available.
