East Haven Memorial Day Plans

This year aims for "a more reflective tone than in the past."

The following is from the office of the mayor.

This year the East Haven Veteran’s Council in conjunction with Mayor April Capone announced that Memorial Day in the Town of East Haven will continue to have a more reflective tone than in the past.

“Memorial Day is about remembering those who have been lost in service to our country but we need to also remember that there are men and women currently serving that need our support.” said Mayor Capone.

The ceremonies and remembrances will be on Monday May 30th and feature a procession from the American Legion Post 89 on Thompson Avenue to the East Haven Town Green.  The precession is scheduled to step off at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 30th Memorial Day.

Club Corvette of CT will provide vehicles for veterans who choose to ride, "Vets in Vettes". This year’s precession will be led by United States Navy WWII Veteran and Post 89 Commander “Tom” Gaetano Gagliardi.

At the Green those present will be entertained by the East Haven High School Marching Band who will perform Patriotic tunes for approximately 30 to 45 minutes.  This will be followed by remarks by Mayor April Capone and other dignitaries.  At 11:45 the Color Guard and guests will move to the War Monuments and Honors will be rendered.  At 12:00 the Flags will be raised to full staff. Finally all are invited back to Post 89 for refreshments.

“We look forward to commemorating this solemn occasion in a manner in tune with the spirit of the holiday.” said Jack Stacey, Secretary of the East Haven Veteran’s Committee.  “Memorial Day is truly the one day each year when we hope the citizenry will take a moment to pay homage to those who sacrificed everything in the name of freedom.”
