Connecticut General Assembly Going to the Dogs - And Cats - This Session

Gun control and the state budget might be taking center stage in Hartford right now, but some legislators are also focusing on ways to help our four-legged friends.

Connecticut's legislature convened last week and began taking on the weighty issues of guns and the state budget.

But some lawmakers also want their colleagues to think about measures to help our family pets.

At least 10 bills have been filed so far that focus on animals, including one that would create a registry of those who abuse animals — similar to the state's sex offender registry — as well as another that would allow animal control officers to use emergency lights when transporting an animal for emergency care, according to the blog Capitol Watch.

Kudos for these proposals. We love animals in Connecticut, not enough is done to help them, and animals do suffer in silence, this sounds great. I didn't know people other than veterinarians could euthanize. Terrible.

Wonderful!! I'm hoping someday ALL SALES of puppies and kittens will be BANNED from pet stores and declawing a cat and debarking a dog will be illegal as well. Maybe someday :)

Would also be nice to make it MANDATORY to spay or neuter the pitbull breed until our shelters are not overloaded with these precious dogs. Seems this breed in predominately owned by those who don't have the sense to spay or neuter. Not all PB breeders of course fit in this category, but unfortunately, most do.
Donna, I take offense with your comment I own 2 Pitbulls and they are both spayed and neutered as that is one of the first things I do upon adopoting a dog.
