POLL: Where Do Drivers Speed the Most in Town?

Readers nominated the worst spots in East Haven. Now it's time to put them to a vote.

where they thought the worst stretches for speeding are in East Haven.

And there was no shortage of nominations or discussion about the parts of town residents frequently find motorists driving recklessly.

In fact, it proved to be one of the most well-trafficked posts over the last several days.

But now, it's time to put those top hot spots for traffic in town to a vote.

Poll Selections

After a review of the comments in last week's post, here are your top six selections:

  • Hemingway Avenue/Coe Avenue
  • North High Street
  • Short Beach Road
  • Foxon Hill Road
  • Charnes Drive
  • Laurel Street
  • Route 80

Traffic Safety Follow Up

So, vote for where you think the most dangerous stretches of roads are in town, and tell us why it's the worst of the worst in the comments.

Then, when we announce the results in our follow up piece next week, East Haven Patch will also speak to town and state officials about ways to improve traffic safety on local streets.

In my experience since I have been living in Foxon, I think Route 80 is probably the worst, with North High Street coming in second. Route 80 has the lights that everybody is trying to blast before they turn red and accidents seem to happen in the same frequented areas between Rite Aid and the plaza where A&P used to be. North High gets pretty crazy around the bend from Mill Street down to T&J. Really wishing people would slow down.

Short Beach Road is winding and hilly. This makes it difficult for someone speeding to see that far ahead in order to stop in time. Also, the stretch of Short Beach Road in East Haven does not have sidewalks while Short Beach Road in Branford does. This is a very residential area and there are lots of people who walk, jog, or ride their bike. There have been numerous accidents at Short Beach and Mansfield Grove including 1 fatality that I am aware of. There have been requests to the town to address safety on this road but they say it is a state road and therefore their responsibility, however, the state says it is the town's responsibility. It is too bad that East Haven doesn't take the safety of its town residents seriously and at the very least, continue the sidewalks that end at the Branford/East Haven line.

Hello Teresa, I have a letter dated September 23, 2009 signed by Mayor April Capone Almon stating that she was "pleased to announce...the installation of a traffic light at this intersection." She was referring to Short Beach Road and Mansfield Grove. Still there is just that flashing light that everyone ignores. What ever happened to this promised traffic light?

Everyone: Although it wasn't really discussed in last week's article, I have added Frontage Road to the poll. Just an FYI.

Teresa, last October, two of my children and I were the victims of an accident on Route 80. A drunk driver blew two lights, one at Rite Aid and the second at the plaza where A&P used to be. His speed was excessive. Within the following week, three more accidents occured in the same area. All four accidents were during daylight/dusk time frames. It seems that every straight away and curvy road in town invite speeders, and a majority of those drivers aren't even residents of East Haven, but resients seem to fall victim to the speeders and their lack of awreness to posted speed limits, stop signs and traffic signals.

FRONTAGE RD.

That was simply called an election "promise".....hence the September date, just before the election....

Frontage road is the worse. When I come home from work at 10pm, numerous times I thought that people were going to fly over me. At one time they were racing on both sides of me. If they wish to hurt themselves, go right ahead and do it. There are people that want to be safe.

I live on Hellstrom Road off of North High Street and the cars fly down that road....During the school year I have placed several calls to the EHPD because we do not have side walks and it is unsafe for the kids to wait for the bus....They fly by so fast that my car shakes..I've yelled and screamed and usually get flipped off by the drivers...its a 25 mph zome and cars do at least 45!!!

Theresa, since I live on Short Beach Road, I know what a nightmare it is. many accidents happen right in front of the Riverside Firehouse. More than on has been killed there to. I also called the state and got the answer, we don't interfer with town Police Departments. Well, its thier road, and it needs corrections to end the speeding and the loud noise of the motorcycles, which by the way go into East Haven center. I see Branford and how well they take care of their roads, and they have crosswalks also. Here its like living in Dodge City. No one wants to listen.
Teddy Cody August 14, 2012 at 04:46 AM
Hellstrom is the worst because it is strictly residential! We are always walking our children and dogs down this road and because its a long and straight it is scary! Every time we walk it we talk about how if a cop sat down one of the side streets he would be ticketing 9 out of 10 cars. These people see kids, dogs, families and another car coming towards them and decide to speed up. I wish they would stake out this road I have never seen police over there!
Laurie August 14, 2012 at 03:48 PM
Worst is strong st its a narrow road I have seen cars go well over 60 mph on that rd Nd cars akidding right through the stop sign where it meets at russo ave ....have seen cars racing on it too
Shari August 14, 2012 at 04:39 PM
Jackie I agree and think they should add a few more stop signs to slow people down especially at corner of Van Horn and North end of Hellstrom its scary pulling out of Van Horn cars go way to fast over there.

No one said this but silver sands road is pretty bad as well, especially an area where a lot of people go bike riding and jogging. I've been running the streets of east haven for the last 12 years or so from foxon to the beach and there aren't many roads people aren't speeding on. I've actually had to jump out of the road too many times to remember due to people speeding and not looking at the road and swerving to the side of the road where i'm running.. I'm not sure what the problem is if i try to think about who the culprits are it isn't just young kids... It's everyone... parents driving suvs with kids in them, high schoolers, young men and women.
raffaelina voira August 14, 2012 at 05:10 PM
I don't live on either short beach rd or mansfield rd. I have tried to come out of mansfield onto short beach rd and it is a hell. You cannot see cars coming arount the curve. I could never do that daily. There should be a light there and not a blinking light.
Shirley Hally August 15, 2012 at 12:34 AM
I live on Coe ave and I have 3 little ones... I can't tell u how petrified I am because of the recklessness I see daily. We have one stop sign and it useless. We need to do something about it.. I am not a fan of speed bumps.. Maybe a rotary in a few spots... Stop signs are useless down here...the motor cycles and the racing has to stop before someone else gets killed .. I have lived here for 1 year and that I know of 4 people have been killed on hemingway & Coe !!!!!
Ann Della Camera August 15, 2012 at 03:29 AM
One of the most dangerous roads to speed on is Short Beach Road. There are many hills, blind spots, hidden driveways, and snake curves. Ask any mailman how safe he feels delivering mail on Short Beach Road. If a cop were to monitor this road, he would make a fortune for the town.
Clare August 15, 2012 at 10:43 AM
Bennett Road, they don't even stop for the stop signs just fly right through them,
Steve Evermore August 15, 2012 at 12:21 PM
I agree with Bennett - everyone cruises right through those stop signs. Even worse, though - Borrelli road between Thomson and Totoket. It's 75% blind corners with no shoulders and yet people go twice the speed limit with no regard for the hidden drives, horse riders, pedestrians, or occasional escaped cow. Just last night three kids managed to plant their car firmly in the woods on Borrelli.
Jackie August 15, 2012 at 02:15 PM
That would be nice....in 15 years 2 of our vehicles have been TOTALLED being parked on the side of the road. We actually widened our driveway so we didn't have to keep a vehicle on the street or juggle around cars.
joe August 15, 2012 at 09:11 PM
the worst s is the 4way stop on by the old high school . no one ever makes a full stop and always blows threw the sign . ive lived near there all my life , and i almost get hit there on a daily basis. its sad that the cops cant do their job because their afraid of getting in trouble . in the last year i think i seen one person pulled over . i easly see dozens of violations everyday in the center .

While speeding around town one cannot help but notice the median divider in front of Stop and Shop. A scenic credit to our town with its black topped center surrounded by huge dead weeds. Looks like a scene from that "After Man " series or down town Detroit. Can't somebody clean that up? And while we are at it the hand dryer in the Stop an Shop mens room still doesn't work worth a damn.
