Feds: Bowden Claimed to Have Guns, Napalm Bombs at East Haven Home [DOC]

Amanda Bowden "made a series of threats that described in great detail her intention to carry out a suicidal mass murder at a community college in New Haven,” according to federal authorities.

The following is a press release from the United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

David B. Fein, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, and Kimberly K. Mertz, Special Agent in Charge of the New Haven Division of the FBI, today announced that .

“As alleged, this defendant made a series of threats that described in great detail her intention to carry out a suicidal mass murder at a community college in New Haven,” stated U.S. Attorney Fein. “All threats of this nature will be viewed as serious by this office and prosecuted to the full extent of federal law.  I commend the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the New Haven and East Haven Police Departments for their swift investigation of this matter.”

“The FBI’s investigations into threats of violence will be swift and thorough,” stated FBI Special Agent in Charge Mertz.  “In this day and age, the making of any threat will not and cannot be tolerated.  There will be consequences.  The Agents and Task Force Officers assigned to the New Haven Division’s Joint Terrorism Task Force and the U.S. Attorney’s Office did an outstanding job in addressing this threat from the time it was first reported to the FBI until the successful arrest of the subject.”

As alleged in the criminal complaint, between approximately February 4 and February 16, 2013, Bowden made numerous telephonic threats, initially through text messaging with a cooperating witness and subsequently through text messaging and verbal conversations with an undercover law enforcement agent, discussing her plans to commit a suicidal mass shooting and bombing at Gateway Community College in New Haven.

In these communications, Bowden claimed to possess firearms and to have constructed at least two napalm-based bombs at her residence.

Bowden was arrested yesterday on (state charges).  At that time, investigating agents conducted a court-authorized search of Bowden’s East Haven residence.  No firearms or explosive devices or related materials were found during the search.

Bowden appeared today before United States Magistrate Judge Holly B. Fitzsimmons in Bridgeport and is detained pending a hearing that is scheduled for March 1.

Bowden is charged with one count of false information and hoaxes. The charge carries a maximum term of imprisonment of five years and a fine of up to $250,000.

U.S. Attorney Fein stressed that a complaint is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. Charges are only allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

This matter is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s JTTF, the New Haven Police Department and the East Haven Police Department.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Henry K. Kopel.

This woman should be locked up and they should throw away the key! These idiots in Hartford are trying to craft new laws to keep our kids safe in school while they don't enforce the current ones. Make an example of this idiot before she goes on a shooting spree! She is obviously mentally insane! I am also willing to bet she gets state aid and that gun she is holding was not purchased legally! LOCK HER UP AND THROW AWAY THE KEY!

About two months ago I had to call the police on this same woman because she tried to force her way into my home and was looking to fight my daughter. The police officer woyldnt arrest her, and when I asked why he wouldn't he replied that she didn't do anything! My response was two fold, "home invasion?" & "she would have but my dog came running to the door and scared her enough to back up" All of this incurred in front of my 11 year old daughter who was traumatized from the event

What a class act. Her parents must be so proud to have such a top notch child. 2 kids by age 19 with 2 different men...numerous warrants, and now this. Wow, what a gem....

What a scumbag. 19 years old, 2 kids with 2 different guys, and now trying to get attention by planning to shoot up innocent educated people. Maybe if she had an education she wouldn't have these thoughts in her head. Where are her parents?! That's what I wana know..

You know what burns my rear end about all this? Our 'leaders' cry for gun control measures which will only affect people who act in accordance with law and reason. Is it my friend, and former church member who owns 2 guns legally the problem? Do the idiots and criminals get the ideas from her? No... they get the idea from the 'Main Stream Media' that glorifies, yes I said it, GLORIFIES these 'gun violence' stories.

what and idiot. Current guns laws prevent anyone under the age of 21 from getting a permit or a hand gun. Hand gun in the picture. So if it is real, it was obtained illegally. So tell me again how new laws will protect you. Enforce what we have and make an example of her.

Nice. Hope someone had enough of a brain to take away her kids and make sure she never gets them back. I especially love the playpen in the picture. Class act.

Please dear God lock this sick woman up, and get her off the streets, this is the golden opportunity to make an example that these kind of sick insensitive talk and threats will not be tollarted in ct at this sensitive time or in the future my whole family goes to gateway including myself. I am taking this very personal and I am furyious. Do something state of connecticut, fereral court or whoever has the power to do the right thing and make an example out of her, I'm calling you out, step up to the plate.

Wonder where the gun went? Wasn't found during the search of her home. So now we have another, most likely illegally obtained hand gun on the streets.
Anthony M February 21, 2013 at 04:05 PM
Richard she is 19, state law already prohibits her from getting handgun legally.
Dee Dee Ferrucci-Russo February 21, 2013 at 04:38 PM
I was questioning if the gun was real last night because of it's appearance. Regardless, she is a sick girl who should not be allowed to be released without serious medical evaluation and treatment as well as jail time. Her kids should be taken away, period!! If the gun is real, the person who it belongs too should face just as stiff a penalty! This is sickening!
Richard Poulton February 21, 2013 at 05:46 PM
I am well aware of that. My question was where is the gun she is pictured holding? was it owned legally buy a "friend" and she was just possing with it. Or was it in the hands of someone not legally allowed to possess and they gave it to her? The scarey part is she is of legal age to buy a rifle, as long as she waits the time period and passes the NICS checks.

Hey everybody, go on line to the WTNH web site and click on the press release as to King Malloy's new gun laws he wants acted on. Man is out of his mind and has no clue on what he wants or how to make it happen. If the Patch does the article it will explode.
Julie Weisberg (Editor) February 21, 2013 at 06:06 PM
Richard: I just posted it here: http://patch.com/A-2hFD And a PDF of the full proposal is attached as well. Just an FYI.

This girl ruined my life with lies. All becuz I wouldnt leave my girlfriend for her and didnt want to even be friends nemore becuz she made me uncomfortable. At first I met her on facebook and just started conversating through texts. N I guess she messed around with one of my friends in the past. N becuz I wouldnt fite him cuz he made fun of her wen I didnt even meet her yet she came to my place and destroyed everything I had...then I told her to never call me again...so she started sayin she was gonna kill herself and sent me pics of her cutting her throat, arms, chest, and legs. A pic of her with a handful of pills, and another of her standing in a tub of water and holding a toaster next to her daughter while pregnant. So I sed I was going to call an ambulance. So she finally started leaving me alone....while this was going on I was in west haven at the fireworks with 3 friends...next thing I know she started calling again. My friend answered my phone and she told her to just stop n leave me alone. A week later im walkin down the street n was picked up on warrants from that day. I was arrested for 3rd degree stangulation and 3rd degree assualt. I was never even near her n only met her one time n for ten minutes. I ended up bein locked up for 2 weekd just for tryin to stay awaty from her cuz shes crazy. While she sat at home laughin
