Fatal East Haven Stabbing Suspect Arrested for Earlier Stabbing Incident

Aaron Powell — charged with first-degree manslaughter after allegedly stabbing Michael Lieto to death during a fight along Maplevale Road in November — faces new charges related to a separate stabbing incident in East Haven last October.

Aaron Powell, the 21-year-old suspect charged with first-degree manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of former East Haven resident Michael Lieto, faces a new set of charges stemming from an earlier fight and stabbing incident that occurred last October in East Haven.

According to East Haven Police Sgt. David Emerman, Powell's most recent arrest results from an investigation into an incident that occurred along Stevens Street last fall.

Emerman told East Haven Patch that officers responded to 70 Stevens Street for a noise disturbance call on Oct. 28.

"Upon arrival, they encountered several people including a stabbing victim, all who were initially uncooperative," Emerman said.

Once on the scene, officers found Derek Dimauro, 22, who had a stab wound to the chest.

Emerman said Dimauro stated that "he was involved in a physical altercation, which resulted in him being stabbed by his assailant."

Based on several witness accounts, officers determined that the suspect was Aaron Powell.

"Powell had already fled the area prior to officers arriving on scene," Emerman said, adding that Diimauro was transported to the hospital and treated for a "non-life threatening stab wound."

An arrest warrant was applied for and granted for Powell for the Oct. 28 incident.

Powell — who is already being held on charges the Maplevale Road fatal stabbing incident — was served at New Haven court on Dec. 27.

He was charged with carrying a dangerous weapon, second-degree breach of peace, second-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment. A bond amount of $100,000 was set and he was scheduled to appear in court the same day

Also, Powell is in relation to the Maplevale case.
