East Haven Firefighters Battle Barberry Road Blaze

A small fire that started on the porch of a Barberry Road home early Tuesday afternoon was quickly brought under control and then extinguished by East Haven Firefighters before it could spread to the rest of the house.

EHFD Assistant Chief Chuck Licata told East Haven Patch on the scene of 399 Barberry Road that although the homeowner was home at the time the fire began, there were no reported injuries.

A UPS driver making deliveries in the area saw the heavy smoke coming out of the front of the home and made the 911 call to report the fire, Licata said.

The cause of the fire, while still under investigation, does not appear to be suspicious in nature.

"It looks to be accidental," Licata said.

When firefighters first arrived on the scene, they were concerned the fire may have been electrical in nature. But that has since been ruled out as a possible cause.

Smoke damage to the home is moderate and limited to the front area of the house, Licata said.

He added that the lower level of damage means the home's residents can continue to reside there during the clean up and repair process.
