Cop Board to Mayor: Discipline Gallo

The Police Commission voted unanimously Tuesday night to ask Mayor Capone to discipline -- even ax -- on-leave Chief Leonard Gallo.

It took about 10 minutes Tuesday evening for the Police Commission to decide to ask Mayor April Capone to mete out discipline to Chief Leonard Gallo -- including firing the 13-year veteran of the East Haven Police Department who's been on paid administrative leave since April 2010.

Commissioners based their decision on findings from the U.S. Department of Justice and Police Executive Research Forum, which cited numerous deficiencies in the department such as outdated policies and procedures, lack of officer training and an inadequate citizen complaint process.

Right after the meeting, held in the Giaimo Conference Room on the ground level of Town Hall, cops, elected officials, such as councilmen, and supporters of Gallo voiced anger but not surprise at the commission's move. Some said they felt the commission and Capone were serving out a "vendetta" against Gallo. Some called the action part of a years-long "witch hunt."
