Congrats! East Haven Police Officer Lt. Joseph Murgo Promoted

Murgo is the department's newest Lieutenant.

On July 1, 2014, Sergeant Joseph Murgo was sworn in as the newest Lieutenant at the East Haven Police Department, according to a press release from the Police Department.

Here is the rest of the press release:

Lt. Murgo was born in the Dominican Republic and adopted at 9 months old by Carole and Dominic Murgo. Lt. Murgo graduated from North Haven High School and initially began a career in electrical work, but soon realized he preferred working with people instead of practicing a trade. Lt. Murgo has several family members in law enforcement who were instrumental in influencing him to become a police officer.

Lt. Murgo became an East Haven police officer in 2003, and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 2012. During his career, he became a Field Training Officer, a CT Police Academy certified instructor and received extensive training in crisis/hostage negotiations. During his crisis negotiation training, he realized that human behavior interested him and he was passionate about helping people in crisis and decided to focus much of his attention on this important field of training.

Lt. Murgo launched the East Haven Police Department’s Facebook page in 2012 which proved extremely useful in today’s age of social media driven communication.

The Department’s Facebook page has been extremely valuable in locating missing persons and disseminating information to a large number of people in a short amount of time.

In 2013, he created the police department’s first Domestic Violence/Crisis Intervention team which upon implementation, will follow up with victims of domestic violence to ensure they have a safety plan in place, to protect them from future dangers. In the future, we hope the team will work side by side with the regional SWAT team to give them an alternative to using force in certain situations.

Lt. Murgo also heads the East Haven chapter of Project Lifesaver, which is a program designed to assist in locating individuals with certain conditions that cause them to wander and potentially find themselves in danger.

The East Haven Police Department is happy to announce Lt. Murgo’s appointment and looks forward to his continued positive contributions to this Department.
