[VIDEO] Branford Quarry Fire: 'Explosives Have Been Secured'

Firefighters were able to control and put out a fire at Stony Creek Quarry late Thursday afternoon — which threatened to ignite a container filled with numerous cases of explosives.

Update at 8:25 p.m.

The following is an overview of the quarry fire via the Branford Professional Firefighters Local 2533 Facebook page.

"The incident at Stoney Creek Granite has been placed under control. No one was hurt and the danger was mitigated without incident. Responding agencies included but are not limited to: Branford FD, Guilford FD, North Branford FD, Branford PD, Branford Public works, CT State Police, and the ATF. While operating at this incident, the Town of Branford did not remain silent. Branford E2 and E4 along with C12 and East Haven's E1(quint) operated at the scene of a house filled with smoke after the flue became detached from the chimney. An automatic fire alarm, a report of a car fire and two emergency medical calls were also handled while this incident continued throughout the afternoon. Fortunately, several off duty firefighters were just completing a class as this call came into the fire department. This fact along with a good response from Branford volunteer engine companies aloud this incident to be mitigated in a safe and timely manner. Strong work by all! Stay safe!"

Update at 5:15 p.m.

"The explosives have been secured and operations are underway to extinguish the fire," Branford Firefighters now report. "With the exception of parts of Quarry Rd, residents are now being allowed back to their homes."
