78-Year-Old Arrested for Growing Marijuana at His East Haven Home

An elderly East Haven man was charged with the illegal cultivation of several marijuana plants, which were apparently visible from the street at his Palmetto Trail home, according to police.

An East Haven senior citizen has been arrested for allegedly growing several marijuana plants at his shoreline home.

John B. Terrace, 78, was arrested by East Haven Police at Palmetto Trail house on Sept. 10.

He was charged with illegal cultivation of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance or possession of more than 4 ounces of marijuana.

'In Plain View'

According to East Haven Police Sgt. David Emerman, the arrest was the result of "an anonymous tip by a complainant" who notified department.

"Some of the plants were in plain view outside, visible from the street," Emerman told East Haven Patch.

Although he did not have an exact number, Emerman said "it appears from the report that several plants were seized."

Not for Sale

And while there were several plants taken from his home, police do not believe the man was growing the pot for anything other than his own personal use.

"Based on the officer’s investigation and interview with the suspect, there was no indication that Mr. Terrace was selling the marijuana," Emerman told East Haven Patch.

Terrace is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Hard to believe. I think the arrestee is taking the rap for a child or grand child.

Who called the police? Was it the local seller? Leave the man alone. He probably uses it for medicinal purposes.

Ah Regina you are so right. Here we have a wise elder with his hands in the soil..tilling the earth just as God intended when he's betrayed by a snoopy neighbor. It's a story old as time and almost Biblical in nature.

I wish Mr Terrace a speedy and complete exoneration. Law enforcement needs to re-direct its focus on crime...to those that are REAL crimes. I was in Federal Prison for 5 years for a marijuana offense. No, it was not for simple possession. I was arrested aboard a Lockheed PV2 in Marianna, Florida...charged and convicted for conspiracy to import and distribute 12,000 pounds of marijuana. At the time, I really had no idea what I had gotten myself into...mine was an offense involving pot...the thought never occurred to me that I may actually spend years in prison for that 'indiscretion.' As my years in prison rolled by, what I did see were armed bank robbers, coming and going...while I still sat there for marijuana. Most of the bank robbers only spent 17 to 24 months. But, I and my fellow 'drug offenders,'...we stayed for years. I wrote about the escapades that led to my incarceration. I admit, I had a great time. No one was injured, no one was killed, firearms were not involved...there were no victims. We were Americans...doing what Americans do best...living free. Truly, it is time for this lunacy to end...it never should have begun. My book is: Shoulda Robbed a Bank I think you may enjoy it.

While we have real felons and race car drivers down by the town beach lets arrest the old guy for medicinal marijuana. Haven't heard to much about smoking driving and killing but you can drink and kill someone. I drive slower when I partake anyway . Hate rats. Probably some tippy.

I've known Mr. Terrace for 40 years and he is an outstanding citizen and was always a great family man!! Obviously it's for medicinal purposes but at that age who cares. I will support him in this matter all the way!!! Kevin Regan neighbor and friend
