Patch’s Poll: Should Illegal Immigrants Who Came Here as Children Face Deportation?

The Obama administration said it will stop deporting some illegal immigrants who are under the age of 16. What are your thoughts on this?

President Barack Obama announced last week that his administration will stop deporting illegal immigrants who came to the United States as children and who pose no security threat.

According to CNN, under the new policy people younger than 30 who came to the United States before the age of 16, pose no criminal or security threat, and were successful students or served in the military can get a two-year deferral from deportation.

These youths will also have to prove they have been in the country for at least five years, the news network said.

Obama said his executive order would make immigration policy “more fair, more efficient and more just,” according to CNN.

"This is not amnesty. This is not immunity. This is not a path to citizenship. It's not a permanent fix," the president said.

The issue has sparked debate among news organizations, political pundits and ordinary citizens, as to whether this is a good move now.

On a local level, Connecticut saw a similar situation like this back in 2004, when a Norwich Free Academy graduate, Majan Jean, was facing deportation because she came to the U.S. illegally when she was 12, according to the Hartford Courant. She avoided being sent to her native Haiti because of legislation that was pending at the time in Congress.

We want to know what you think.

Do you think illegal immigrants, brought here as children and now under the age of 16, should face deportation? Regardless of their social standing in society? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

If you want to live in our WONDERFUL country, then why is it such a big deal to become a CITIZEN?
Doreen Boudreau Hausler June 19, 2012 at 09:48 pm
Shari, it's actually a quite long and difficult and expensive process to become a citizen. Many people who are currently here, "illegally", would love to become citizens here. There is so much that so many people do not understand, which causes us to pass judgement on others.
It is no simple process. And in my opinion, children who end up here due to factors they have no control over, deserve a chance to pursue the right avenues to become citizens.

I agree, Doreen but I also agree with Shari. These young people now have two years to actively pursue the process of becoming a legal citizen. There are many, many organizations across the country and public agencies that have been and are ready and willing to help person's wanting citizenship to achieve it. It is expensive and it is lengthy but then there is $$$ philanthropic avenues and again, public dollars, to assist with the process. So...if these young people are thankful for the reprieve they are receiving they can show it by following the process that so many LEGAL immigrants have followed and become citizens.

I was going to write my own comment, but Kathleen, I think yours is perfect and I agree with you 100%.
Doreen Boudreau Hausler June 19, 2012 at 11:42 pm
Yes, but... Kathleen... we're talking about minors here. Don't you think it's the right thing to do, to give them a chance to make this happen? While there may very well be agencies and avenues to assist them, do these students know how to pursue them? All I am saying is these kids did not choose their course. They should not be thrown back, or thrown out. Give them a chance to make their way. The course is long and hard. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. And, I'm thankful that I was born here.
I'll add that the process wasn't easy for earlier generations of newcomers to this country. However, it was easier. People forget, or do not know that fact.

America can`t provide descent jobs for American children, why should we spend our tax dollars helping illigal s .America has been a nation of immigrants, this was in a time when we had massive manufacturing now we have millions out of work and no future job growth yet were still allowing millions of immigrants legal and illigal to come to our country.WHY
Lise Cavallaro June 20, 2012 at 12:49 am
All immigrants should be "legal immigrants". Granted, the process is a long one, but I know people who have done it. Some more recently, others over 30 years ago. It can be done if you want it bad enough. Just like most things in life.

30 years old? Face it , this rule screws up any kind of illegal immigration enforcement except for those caught in some criminal activity. Even then we are better off keeping convicted alien criminals here in jail because after expulsion from the country they just return and cause more trouble.
Lou June 20, 2012 at 04:42 pm
People under 30 are now minors? Please! We will now know who these people actually are so they should be forced to become citizens of this country or they can leave.
Lou June 20, 2012 at 04:44 pm
Send them all somewhere else. We have enough people robbing the system blind.
Doreen Boudreau Hausler June 20, 2012 at 05:25 pm
Lou... The kids that came here prior to age 16 are plainly who I was referring to. The path to citizenship is a long and arduous task. One that thankfully, you and I will never have to endure. Nor will we have to endure the experiences these people and their families left behind. Nor will we ever truly know what their journey was like to get here. But, I've read and learned what I could, so as to better understand their experiences. It's quite apparent to me that many of these families came here (much like all of our ancestors) to give their children a better life with more opportunities.
You have, at your fingertips, a computer with internet access. I implore you and everyone to try to understand the plight of others. There is lots of information out there.

Gov. O'mally is ruining this State by driving more and more people into poverty, giving illegalsRead More drivers licenses, letting criminals out of jail early, pushing good companies out, and making it's citizens unsafe. Time to clean house starting locally!

WE THE PEOPLE have no say in how governments govern nor how OUR money is spent. WE supposedly electRead More people who take the trust of the people with them when elected and do the will of WE THE PEOPLE. This has never happened. Especially in state and federal office. Once in office the power they discover they now have pushes aside the will of the people. It an attitude of we have the power and you don't. Someday, but I doubt it, we can elect those who will not loose site of why they were elected.

Beth - I am sorry to hear about your disappointment and I'll try to explain a few of your points.Read More First, Patch is a community forum as well as a news source. We have been looking for sports-minded folks to blog for us and keep us informed about events such as the softball team's state playoffs. We don't have a sports editor to cover just sports for the town so we rely on folks in the community to help us all stay informed. Many Patch sites have a sports blogger who reports on sports. Anyone interested?? In regard to the accident on No. High Street, you are correct in the fact that minimal information was reported and there was a reason for that - because minimal information was released to the press. We asked, we didn't get answers. And with our new format, there are 'bugs' in the system which are being worked out, so we apologize for all of them ahead of time, especially when links don't work or when spacing is off. It's frustrating, I understand. Please continue to support the EH Patch.
