Patch Poll: Should Bysiewicz Pull the Murphy Attack Ad and Apologize?

CTNewsJunkie.com reports that even though Susan Bysiewicz admits that parts of her latest Wall Street-focused ad against her U.S. Senate Democratic primary opponent are “inaccurate,” she'll continue to run it because the overall message stands.

Following a televised debate on Sunday, former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz acknowledged that certain aspects of her latest attack ad against Democratic primary frontrunner Rep. Chris Murphy were “inaccurate.”

The ad has sparked a back-and-forth between the Democratic candidates, who are both gearing up for the Aug. 14 primary in Connecticut.

In the 30-second ad, which is viewable here, Bysiewicz takes aim at campaign contributions Murphy has received since being elected to Congress in 2006. Bysiewicz claiims Murphy has received more hedge fund donations than any other Democrat in Congress.

This claim, as her campaign acknowledged, was inaccurate. However, as reported by CTNewsJunkie.com, Bysiewicz says the overall message stands: Murphy has received significant financial backing from Wall Street.

From 2006 to 2011, Murphy has accepted more than $700,000 in contributions from financial entities, although not all of that was straight Wall Street cash, according to OpenSecrets.org. In fact, as CTMirror.org points out, the category is broad because it includes many Connecticut-based financial houses as well as insurers within Hartford.

"Here's the larger point," Bysiewicz spokesman Jonathan Ducote told CTMirror.org. "There is a whole series of data points we were trying to demonstrate. He has benefited from Wall Street cash to the detriment of the middle class."

Murphy’s campaign has argued that the ad should come down, citing the fact that it contains the inaccuracies.

Murphy told CTNewsJunkie.com the following:

“If Susan is continuing to insist on running the ad it reflects a denial of reality that is both sad and a little frightening.”

What is your take on this ad? Should Bysiewicz remove it and apologize because a portion of it is incorrect? Or should she continue to run the ad because, as her campaign puts it, the overall message of the ad is accurate? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

If Ms Bysiewicz is the person responsible for the farce we have for a voting machine who in their right mind would vote for her. She should have gone to Tennessee, where they use a suitcase sized electronic machine with paper backup.

Doreen - stop by one of my campaign events and you'll see that I talk in-depth with voters and listen to their ideas. I DO think voters are smart and can see through phoney individuals posing as knowledgeable candidates. I also agree lemmings need not apply. We deserve independent thinkers in office who are not beholden to special interests.
Ruth July 24, 2012 at 12:42 pm
Of course she should pull it and then pull out of the race as well. Her track record for accuracy and competence was first displayed when she was Secy of the State and continues. The information on funding in her adv is widely known to have been lifted from another Murphy from NY state. Who are her campaign advisors and adv developers are just as much to blame.
Lise Cavallaro July 24, 2012 at 01:01 pm
To run an ad that already has been proven to be inaccurate, is just plain ignorant.
Catherine Zamecnik July 24, 2012 at 01:41 pm
Conservative Republican candidates bank on the stupidity of the American People (Fox News). Linda McMahon is pushing in her campaigne that she can save the average Ct household $500 dollars a month. WOW! That sounds awesome! Who wouldn't want that? Well, probably the people who's much needed state asistance would be eliminated wouldn't be. And she'll create jobs to boot. Amazing! But how, if the gov't jobs that provide services and maintain our infrastructure are eliminated? How can she do all that?....By taking away from the needy to give to the greedy. It IS actually all about money, PACs and special interest. R&D's are all bought by Wall Street. Our voices are heard but not listened to.
Daria Novak July 24, 2012 at 02:20 pm
Catherine - I can tell you this... as a US Congressional candidate in Eastern CT I listen to people in all 64 towns in my district and I hear their message. They want jobs in the private sector, less government spending, less public debt, and to keep government over-regulation of businesses from stiffling our companies. From experience I can confirm voters are smart and have good, solid ideas about how they want to run our country. The problem is that those in power forget too often that it is we, the people, who run this nation. We are the bosses, not those in Hartford or in DC. They are supposed to represent our voices and vote the will of the people.
The grass roots organization we have built for my campaign is large, organized and well-informed. Voters, not special interests, run it. I hope you'll take a look at my campaign and consider joining us. We have people from all over CT helping because they believe, as I do, in the power of the people to govern, in the US Constitution, and in the ingenuity of the American entrepeneur. We will fix what's broken and restore the economy if we work together. Check out my web site at www.novakforcongress.com
Catherine Zamecnik July 24, 2012 at 03:41 pm
You hear what you want to hear from the people you want to hear it from. I've seen your campaign. We need jobs in the private sector, but we need GOOD jobs in the private sector. Your campaign is not new. Create low pay, insecure jobs with no benefits by replacing good, secure jobs that serve our community. Sure...there is waste in Gov't. Much waste and deception are in the private sector also. Everyone must sacrifice in these tough times, not just the needy, and "job creators" need to stop stamping their feet like babies because they need to take part in the recovery without being paid for it. People are more concerned about taxes more than ever because they don't have JOBS TO PAY FOR THEM! Yet, the people most concerned about taxes are those who have the most to contribute. Unfortunately, more people are going to need gov't services if things keep going the way they are.

Catherine - We've had a huge increase in poverty under Obama, a huge increase in government spending & public debt, a record 47 million are on government assistance & our kids have fallen to #25 in global competitiveness because of the decline in our educational system.
You incorrectly state I'm seeking to create low paying jobs. You're fabricating that and have NEVER heard it from me. I support just the opposite. Small business make up the majority of American jobs and form the backbone of our economy. We need to stop hurting these businesses through over-regulation and high taxation. Our corporate income tax is the highest in the world. That drives American businesses to invest overseas and foreign businesses to avoid investing here. You are correct when you say "more people are going to need government services if things keep going the way they are." THAT is exactly why we must change what we're doing. More of the same will only produce more failure! I'm sure you've heard the expression "garbage in, garbage out." We need to kick out the incumbents responsible and support real reform. You wrote: " "job creators" need to stop stamping their feet like babies because they need to take part in the recovery without being paid for it." You can't be serious? I worked in Communist China and this is the type of statement typical of that government. Are you proposing communism for America? China calls its policy the "iron rice bowl." I DO NOT support communism.

Daria, what regulations has the president implemented on businesses that is hurting them??
Daria Novak July 24, 2012 at 05:50 pm
VJ - See for details. http://blog.heritage.org/2012/03/18/chart-of-the-week-obama-tops-bush-with-more-costlier-major-regulations/
"In his first three years of presidency, President George W. Bush imposed 28 major regulations at a cost of $8.1 billion. Obama imposed 106 major regulations at a cost of $46 billion. “This is almost four times the number—and more than five times the cost—of the major regulations issued by George W. Bush during his first three years,” according to the report." The report it refers to is from the US Government Accountability Office, of the GAO, and is posted on Heritage.org. President Obama has added billions in compliance and regulatory cost that hurt American businesses and our forces jobs overseas. Heritage also reports: "Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) said the report explains why job creators are struggling to put Americans back to work under an increasing regulatory burden. “Our government can create the environment for the private sector to grow jobs. But under this administration, it won’t. Small businesses, and not the government, are the primary driver of job creation in this country,” Issa said. “This report explains why job creators say they are struggling to put Americans back to work under an ever increasing regulatory burden.” Check out Heritage Foundation's reports. They use USG data and elaborate on how this Administration is hurting American workers and destroying our economy.
V.J. Peregolise July 24, 2012 at 06:11 pm
I am not interested in a comparison between Bush and Obama I am looking for which specific regulations has President Obama implemented that is stiffing business. I don't see that listed in the link you provided. I would assume you don't need a link.
What regulations did the voters in Connecticut you talked to, who complained about government regulation, complain about?
Lou July 24, 2012 at 06:16 pm
If you’ve got a business – you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.’ - Barack Obama.....
Doreen Boudreau Hausler July 24, 2012 at 06:19 pm
Lou, if you're going to quote President Obama, at least quote a little more to show proper context. This speech is being spun all over the place. It was well intended and I totally understand what he was trying to say in this speech. It's a shame that media gives the country a sound byte and too many folks eat it up with a spoon as fed by the media.
The quote actually reads: "If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn't get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet. The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together."
Lou July 24, 2012 at 06:42 pm
Doreen I guess it's a matter of who writes this stuff. The article I read didnt have any of the what you just posted.
Maggie Mae July 24, 2012 at 07:03 pm
She should withdraw from the race. Her decision are not great and she calls herself a LAWYER?????? I think not!
Catherine Zamecnik July 24, 2012 at 07:49 pm
Daria.....your comment is just as I suspected. Go ahead and keep repeating the regulations and high taxes are what's keeping businesses from hiring mantra. And of course if I don't agree with your solutions, then I'm a socialist or communist ...How dare you. Very typical and ignorant response. You have made clear what you stand for and I, as a small business owner want nothing to do with your kinds of solutions. Nothing but the same old BS, cutting taxes that help our community and regulations that ensure a clean healthy environment is a waste of our tax money?????????. I'm sick of that nonsense. I stand by my words. Good Day.
Charles July 24, 2012 at 08:33 pm
Daria lies and plagerizes again?
Accusations of runaway regulation by the Obama administration have become a common line of attack from conservatives who warn over-regulation is stifling job creation per FactCheck.org.
DisgruntledInClinton July 24, 2012 at 09:06 pm
I enjoy Daria's well-informed views. I really wish Charles, who is from Madison, and just as nasty and negative there, would stay away from our Clinton Patch. He is poison.
Daria Novak July 24, 2012 at 09:08 pm
Charles you are losing it. I attributed this data to the Heritage Foundation. The Heritage Foundation did not lie about it as you insinuated. Whether liberals like the data points or not, Heritage obtained it from public records put out by the GAO, which is part of the USG!
You can check it out at www.gao.gov. Are you going to claim that the Obama Administration is lying about the data? Or, now that your falacious argument is exposed will you back down and recognize the truth? I suggest readers acquaint themselves with The Heritage Foundation, a top notch think tank in Washington, DC. Their data comes directly from the U.S. government and everyeone has an opportunity to check it out. I am off to other things now.
Doreen Boudreau Hausler July 24, 2012 at 09:16 pm
You read a news byte, taking a tiny snippit of information and chopping it into something out of context.
I've learned to multi-source news. I don't rely on our major networks for the story anymore. I try to find the bigger picture. It doesn't take that much effort. Mass media is corporate owned. Corporations have special interests. Don't rely on them.
V.J. Peregolise July 24, 2012 at 09:28 pm
We know the heritage foundation. It's a conservative think tank where sean hannity listeners go to get talking points to debate with liberals. Yeah we know it.
I want to know what regulation(s) has President Obama implemented that the business owners in Connecticut that you spoke to say are hurting their businesses?
CAjones July 24, 2012 at 10:19 pm
Here is a list of just seven, hopefully this will help Mr. V.J. to understand.
EPA/AR Reconsideration of the 2008 Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards cost $19-90 Billion EPA/AR National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Coal- and Oil-Fired Electric Utility Steam Generating Units. cost $10 Billion EPA/AR National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Major Source Industrial, Commercial & Institutional Boilers and Process Heaters cost $3 Billion EPA/SWER Standards for the Management of Coal Combustion Residuals Generated by Commercial Electric Power Producers cost $0.6-1.5 Billion DOT/NHTSA Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, Rearview Mirrors cost $2 Billion DOT/FMCSA Electronic On-Board Recorders and Hours of Service Supporting Documents cost $2 Billion DOT/FMCSA Hours of Service cost $1 Billion These are just seven actual proposed job-killing regulations. There are many more! Look it up........
V.J. Peregolise July 25, 2012 at 01:13 am
I appreciate everybodies help with the links and list of regatuons passed. I am very familiar with regulations passed I work for a major utility and deal with them daily
I don't need a list of regulations passed I want to know which regulations the business owners she spoke to in ct complained about as killing their businesses. This is the third and last time I'll ask. I don't understand why this is a difficult question to both understand and answer. .
Catherine Zamecnik July 25, 2012 at 01:24 am
Nice cut and paste job CAJones. Could it have been from this source? www.newsmax.com/ErnestIstook/Obama-Regulations.../409593
Try to use more than one source and also learn a bit more about the importance of these regulations. Try this source: www.epa.gov/ozonedesignations/2008standards/.../eparesp/R6_AR_r... In case you won't bother to read it, I'll pull out a paragraph the spotlights the importance of the regulation......And mind you, this was in 2008...before Obama became president. "On March 12,2008, the EPA revised its national ambient air quality standards for ground-level ozone to provide increased protection of public health and the environment. The EPA lowered the primary 8-hour ozone standard from 0.08 parts per million (ppm) to 0.075 ppm to protect against health etlects associated with ozone exposure, including a range of serious respiratory illnesses and increased premature death from heart or lung disease. The EPA revised the secondary 8-hour ozone standard, making it identical to the primary standard, to protect against welfare effects, including impacts on sensitive vegetation and forested ecosystems. History shows us that better health and cleaner air go hand-in-hand with economic growth. Working closely with the states and tribes, the EPA is implementing the standards using a common sense approach that improves air quality and minimizes the burden on state and local governments".
DHHS CLASS OF 1971 July 25, 2012 at 03:17 am
Wow....to think this all started with the fact that Susan Byciewicz is a liar and Chris Murphy votes with Nancy Pelosi almost 99% of the time. Not much of a choice for a person who would like to vote for trustworthy politicians. Of course, that is a oxymoron. As for the extremely in depth research on EPA mandates from Nancy Pelosi's second year as Speaker of the House from Catherine Zamecnik, I would like to encourage Ms. Zamecnik to focus that same inquisitive passion to find out what
President Obama studied at Columbia and Harvard. For reasons that completely escape me, I cannot understand why he would not be very proud of the subjects he obviously mastered. Why is our President hiding what he studied from the American people? I thought BHO promised the most transparent administration ever? obviously mastered at those two Ivy League Universities. Could it be our President isa
Lou July 25, 2012 at 01:23 pm
So Doreen, where do you get your news then?
Jay July 25, 2012 at 01:48 pm
Remember " Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" - Jimmy Steward portrayal of a people's representative in Washington is the vision most people hold as "their" rep.
So what has vicious Suzie or Murphy actually done or tried to accomplish in that light for Connecticut citizens ? Chris Shays actually went to jail protesting against a corrupt probate judge.
Catherine Zamecnik July 25, 2012 at 01:52 pm
What the "F" are you talking about? I don't trust many politicians on either side. I speak strictly in practical terms and I don't give a $#!^ what the president studied at Columbia. I care about the health an well being of people and our environment. THAT'S IT!
CAjones July 26, 2012 at 03:34 pm
