Patch’s Poll: Do You Think Competitive Cheerleading is a Sport?

In a case involving Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, a federal appeals court has ruled that colleges cannot count competitive cheerleading as a sport under the federal Title IX standards.

The pom poms, team spirit and impressive acrobatic high jumps apparently don’t cut it in the world of competitive sports.

According to The Associated Press, the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in Connecticut has found that competitive cheerleading “does not yet meet the standards of a varsity sport under Title IX, the federal law that mandates equal opportunities for men and women in education and athletics.”

In short, the AP reported that the ruling, which was issued Tuesday, came down following an appeal from Quinnipiac University in Hamden two years ago.

Quinnipiac was sued by its volleyball coach after the university tried to get rid of the women’s volleyball program in exchange for a competitive cheerleading program.

The volleyball coach won, and the program stayed at the university, but Quinnpiac appealed the case in federal court.

The appeals court wrote that, while cheerleading can be physically challenging, the sport still isn’t organized enough with defined rules within the collegiate system that would warrant it as a varsity sport. That could come with time, but it’s not here yet, the AP reported.

Do you agree with the appeals court decision that competitive cheerleading doesn't count as a varsity sport under the Title IX law? Take our poll and share your thoughts in the comments.

Although spirit and pom squad cheerleaders may be athletes, unless you have a competative cheer program that competes against other cheer squads I do not feel like they should be a sport. When you compete, you have a quantifiable set of criteria that your squad is measured against, and these athletes that compete, shoud be recognized as a sport.

Like marriage, the definition of what once constituted the word "Sport" is no longer identifiable or valid.
The convolusion of the English language can be traced back to President Clinton when he said under oath ..".it depends on what the meaning of the word "is" is?"

WE THE PEOPLE have no say in how governments govern nor how OUR money is spent. WE supposedly electRead More people who take the trust of the people with them when elected and do the will of WE THE PEOPLE. This has never happened. Especially in state and federal office. Once in office the power they discover they now have pushes aside the will of the people. It an attitude of we have the power and you don't. Someday, but I doubt it, we can elect those who will not loose site of why they were elected.

Beth - I am sorry to hear about your disappointment and I'll try to explain a few of your points.Read More First, Patch is a community forum as well as a news source. We have been looking for sports-minded folks to blog for us and keep us informed about events such as the softball team's state playoffs. We don't have a sports editor to cover just sports for the town so we rely on folks in the community to help us all stay informed. Many Patch sites have a sports blogger who reports on sports. Anyone interested?? In regard to the accident on No. High Street, you are correct in the fact that minimal information was reported and there was a reason for that - because minimal information was released to the press. We asked, we didn't get answers. And with our new format, there are 'bugs' in the system which are being worked out, so we apologize for all of them ahead of time, especially when links don't work or when spacing is off. It's frustrating, I understand. Please continue to support the EH Patch.
