Loud Explosions

Does anyone know what the loud explosions occurring in East Haven or New Haven are?  They  begin with a whistle and then a loud crashing that actually shakes our house.  We're near the golf course.  This has been going on for at least a week.  My husband phoned the East Haven police dep't today, 6/24/14/ but they gave no information and said his was the first call about this that they received.
