DeLauro: ban mashed potatoes!

Wednesday Rosa Delauro expressed opposition to several proposals to eliminate govt waste, including one that would grant school districts an opportunity to ‘postpone’ enforcement of new school lunch rules imposed by the 2010 Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act. DeLauro called the proposal an “assault on the federal nutrition standards” and declared it “criminal”.

However, a federal audit released in Feb.  concluded—

the new mandatory school lunch menus have been disastrous!—

leaving the menus so expensive or unpalatable that more than 1 MILLION students have stopped buying lunch. Some school districts told federal investigators they had to add unhealthy pudding and potato chips to menus to meet the govt’s minimum calorie rules.

In many districts students are going hungry because of smaller entree portions demanded by the law—which has led to behavioral issues and lack of attentiveness.

Cafeterias regularly report finding fruits and vegetables—which they’ve been ‘ordered’ to serve—ending  up in trash cans, with significant increase in “plate waste”.

The increased amount of time and effort to prepare fruits and vegetables also has led to ‘low morale’  issues when staff see students throw the fruits and vegetables in the trash.

Investigators found that some students ended up buying food from vending machines—or  went off campus to eat.

321 school districts dropped out of the school lunch program altogether to avoid the mandates: their cafeteria monitors obviously live in the Real World—

something Rosa DeLauro has very little connection with.

Consequently even the School Nutrition Association advocates a “pause” in the federal standards because it said many schools are overwhelmed by the requirements and are seeing dramatically increased costs and waste as children throw uneaten lunches away.

The Govt. Accountably Office concluded “participation will improve over time as students adjust”. However, historical precedence proves otherwise:

when your govt. tries to micromanage human behavior—

like telling your kids what they must and must not eat—

it inevitably fails.

DeLauro: “a congressional move to include white potatoes… could lead the nation down a slippery slope”. Who knew??!

“If Congress can dictate what’s in the WIC [Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants & Children] package, then it could dictate all kinds of things”—

Like mandating health care. Or outlawing gun ownership.

Or even banning mashed potatoes!

If you believe in returning our govt to the People—YOU!—

rather than allowing it to be run by corrupt, self-serving, elitist, control-freak MultiMillionaires like DeLauro—
