Don’t Look Now But Connecticut Is About to Hit Rock Bottom

We need fiscally conservative job creators to pull us out of this nose dive before we hit rock bottom. Our state is in a downward spiral.

We are on a downward spiral, but the administration doesn’t want you to know.

Back in February of this year I penned an opinion piece entitled, . In the piece I wrote, it's time to stop denying what is painfully obvious: the Administration's plan is not working.

Six months later we are faced with an unemployment rate that is higher than the national rate and approximately 150,000 residents are still with out a job.

Connecticut’s unemployment rate is 8.4% compared to the national rate of 8.3 percent.  And if you consider the trends the picture is worse.

  • Since 2011, Connecticut's unemployment rate has been higher than the U.S. rate 4 times (Jan, Feb, March of 2011 & July 2012).
  • Since 2011, Connecticut's unemployment rate has been higher than 8% for 15 out of the past 19 months.

Adding insult to injury our state and national unemployment figures don’t include the growing number of unreported unemployed.  Those who have stopped looking for work, those who have not filed for unemployment and those who are self employed but had to close shop for lack of business.

Not only are our people out of work they are still reeling from the affects of higher taxes. When you have a retroactive tax that doubles the withholding amounts from people’s paychecks families feel it.  They don’t invest, they don’t take vacation, they don’t do home improvements and they don’t get ahead.

We can see the economic picture by just scanning some of the predictors. Net new business starts are down 39.9% and home sales are down 26% compared with June 2010.  These are indicators of future economic activity.  Which appears to be slow and not the recovery we need. These indicators of current and future economic activity unfortunately, confirm that the recovery from the recession is slow and on the wrong path.

Again, Connecticut is moving in the wrong direction.  Government spending has increased $1.3 billion under Governor Dannel Malloy's administration, from $19.2 billion to $20.5 billion.  Ct citizens can not afford to pay for the largest tax increase in state history while government spending continues down this reckless road at such unchecked speed.

Malloy’s highly publicized first 5 program has spent $339.3 million on eight projects for a promise of 3,958 new jobs over a period of up to 10 years approximately $85,725 per new job.  But when will those jobs actually materialize? Are they good paying? And will they last?

Governor, Dan Malloy, who promised a gimmick free budget, actually relied on one-time revenues and other gimmicks to balance the current budget.

Some of the most notable gimmicks include:

  • stealing $70 million from the Special Transportation Fund
  • raiding $8 million from the Banking Fund moving a number of operating expenditures to the capital budget such as Town Aid Road and the Underground Storage Tank program
  • plugging a $50 million hole with phantom Medicaid savings based on absolutely no data

Using such one-time revenue sources exacerbates the deficit that is looming in FY 2014 and creates a great possibility of the state facing a deficit again in just a few months.

We should be moving down a path of promoting jobs with in Connecticut small businesses and curbing state spending.  Instead signs of failure are all around from the poorly funded state pension funds, a moody’s investment service downgrade to borrowing money to pay for employee salaries and operating expenses, yet no one in the Governor’s office wants you to notice and no one is willing to take responsibility.

To most recently illustrate that fact, he claimed last week that his own Department of Labor were mistaken when they released the latest unemployment figures which demonstrated that unemployment had increased since last month.

Thankfully, I think people are beginning to see the affects of the administrations poor policies.  In the latest Quinnipiac poll the Governor’s approval rating dropped to a low of 37%.  Our state cannot sustain this type of mismanagement with a complete disregard for accountability.

Malloy’s inner circle may not want you to know our state is in a downward spiral but it is.  We need fiscally conservative job creators to pull us out of this nose dive before we hit rock bottom.

Sounds like Mr. Hoff is accusing a state senator of either taking bribes or illegal actions without proof. Close to a slander issue on his part. Gee Hoff, why don't you attack him for making money on building and selling homes on his property on Silver Sands Road? He must have had to bribe someone alone the way to get that done according to your thinking. You are a little man with nothing else to do except attack people in a different political party.
Bob Fawkes September 7, 2012 at 01:57 pm
Inheriting a million here or there never hurt anybody as far as I could tell...
Bob Fawkes September 7, 2012 at 02:02 pm
Other than parroting the standard GOP party line that "We need fiscally conservative job creators.." Senator Fasano offers up NO SOLUTIONS here. Where's the beef Senator? Eyeing the Governor's Mansion are you?
Dan McCann September 7, 2012 at 02:26 pm
There he goes again the new face of the East Haven Democratic Party Mr. Robert Hoff. Jealousy your party's new platform is not working and it will be seen at the ballot box. Now Mr. Hoff can you articulate a factual basis for your claim or are you going to continue with the proverbial diareha of the mouth?
Richard Poulton September 7, 2012 at 02:35 pm
Personally I don't think any politician can "make jobs". Other then increasing those on the federal payroll such as BO has done, jobs are created by those who own a business. People are hired when productivity increases. Profits increase, expansion needed. Want to do this, reduce cost of doing business. Business owners are taxed to death as it is. Family member owning a small industrial business, employed 75 people, was basically put out of business by ever increasing demands put on by the state. He could only afford to abide by these demands so much, forced to take business out of state. Welcome to CT.
Robert D. Hoff - Working for a better East Haven September 7, 2012 at 02:52 pm
I was asking a question but since Mr Mcann asked for a factual Basis for my claim this is for you Dan,..."Oakledge, based in Long Island, was represented by Timothy Lee, who is a partner with state Sen. Leonard Fasano, R-North Haven, and Alphonse Ippolito in Fasano, Ippolito & Lee."

Welcome to the long term Global Economic Contraction, Mr. Poulton. This is, and will ever be, more a fact of life for all of us living in the first half of the 21st century. We (and our elected officials) will need to wrap our heads around the fact that the good old days of decades long sustained economic growth (locally, nationally, globally) are gone for good; at least in our lifetimes. Hardships of all sorts lay ahead. We need forward thinking leaders who see the problems for what they are and who address viable short and long term solutions for us. Pointing fingers and parroting worn out party rhetoric implies nothing but the same old ambitious party hack; looking out for himself, looking to climb the political ladder. Again I ask: WHERE'S THE BEEF?
Richard Poulton September 7, 2012 at 03:06 pm
So, in your little mind, a law firm respresenting something/someone, and who has a right to make a profit in the business they are in, just like any other business, is wrong.
A lawyer from this firm, not Fasano, represented this company in front of the wetlands commission. We did not like what was presented. It was reduced, numerous restrictions imposed upon approval. The lawyer did his job, we did ours. Yes, this operation was hugh but the wetlands concerns were met and protected. No pushing by attorney's to get approved. So I guess your issue is that Mr. Fasano, a private lawyer, having a right to be in business, make a profit to sustain that business, is a state elected official, thus he or his firm should stay away from such representation, because in your mind every one is on the take.
Robert D. Hoff - Working for a better East Haven September 7, 2012 at 03:18 pm
According to the New Haven Register- "Oakledge is represented by Fasano, Ippolito & Lee, the law firm of state Sen. Leonard Fasano, R-North Haven."
If a State Senator is directly benefitting something that destroys the lives of those that that Senator is suppossed to be working on behalf of as a Senator then yes indeed there is something wrong with that. By the way how are you doing with your wetland situation?
Richard Poulton September 7, 2012 at 03:37 pm
Again, I don't have a problem with this law firm or any other that specializes in a certain area, and are good at what they do, from doing legal work for anyone.
My wetlands issues? Explain!
Richard Poulton September 7, 2012 at 03:54 pm
Where's the Beef you ask. From what I gather from your writings you would prefer a form of government such as in Venezuela and controlled by someone like Chavez. Government controls everything and runs citizens lives right down to the minute. Now there is a system you would love lining in I'm sure.
Richard Poulton September 7, 2012 at 04:14 pm
Good article in today's AOL "Daily Finance". I will keep it short and paraphrase.
1. Yes, un-employment in July fell from 8.3% to 8.1%. Sounds good but reason given people just gave up looking for a job. 2. 41,000 fewer jobs added in June & July then projected. Reason - cash short state/local governments cut 39,000 jobs from payrolls. 3. 10 year Treasury notes fell to 1.63% from 1.73%, economist suggest investors see a slowing of economy 4. Manufactures cut more jobs in the past 2 years dropping the work force to a 31 yr. low. Makes for good reading.
Richard Poulton September 7, 2012 at 04:17 pm
Waiting for an answer Hoff. What wetlands situation???
Dan McCann September 7, 2012 at 04:30 pm
Robert instead of being jealous and acting like a fool get an education and you can be just Len. Until then clam up. The jealousy of your life we don't care to see on these boards. We in the United States celebrate success. Hats off to Len for what he has built along with his family. Maybe you should ask him for a job work hard and stop the whining that Len's business is successful at what they do.
Richard Poulton September 7, 2012 at 04:50 pm
Hey Dan, notice Hoff is either insinuating something about me having a wetlands issue or maybe trying to accuse me of something sinister and I ask him to explain what he means he fails to answer me in asking him what he means. Typical of him to throw something out there and have no backing of his comment.
Richard Poulton September 8, 2012 at 01:31 pm
Almost 24 hours have passed and still no response from Hoff. So I will respond with this. What wetlands situation? There are no wetlands on concern on my property.
Dan McCann September 8, 2012 at 01:43 pm
Rich he got nothing but a grand illusion of being someone...what a joke
Robin Keohane September 9, 2012 at 11:29 am
Senator Fasano I for one believe you look at the bigger picture. We need to take responsibility for robbing the rich and sprinkling tidbits to the poor. Let's face it the wealthy are the small to medium businesses that do most of the hiring and the large business sector is supported by wealthy stock investors and when the bottom line drops so does the funds for employment training and growth. Most wealthy people I know do not blow their money families live well but money is reinvested to make more that's the American dream. Take more out of their pockets and the families still live well but the growth slows. People who are jealous of the wealthy should stop and think who hands them their paycheck or paid their last dividen!
Frank Capone September 9, 2012 at 01:05 pm
You are clueless, I ran a small business for 30 years. We did very well during Bill Clinton's terms, not so well under the Bushwackers. After 8 years of W's trickle down we closed!!! The only thing that trickled down to us was $4.00 gas and $3.00 bread. As a small business owner I needed one thing, I could pay my taxes, pay my employees, pay my overhead, and make a profit if I had people coming through my door with money to spend. I wished that the billions in subsidizes that went to trillion dollar big oil went to people to buy american made products. That's not going to happen because the oil money goes to political campaigns. How about the 7 million dollar tax break McMann wants for herself or the $78,000.00 write off Romneys taken for his olympic show horse. The american dream is to work hard, buy a home, raise your family, live well, enjoy life a little. Oh, and to be able to afford health ins. and have SS when we retire. We don't want to go to a big business Ins, Co. with a $2,000 voucher to pay $8,000 for health ins. You confuse jealousy with asking the greedy to pay a little more and stop obstructing the economy from getting better. Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. So much for more TRICKLE DOWN!!!
Robin Keohane September 9, 2012 at 02:08 pm
Frank one can not comment on your situation to many variables. I am sorry for your loss but many businesses are not only getting by they are thriving it depends on product location and many other factors. We had small business but also worked corporate jobs and invested I am far from clueless I could write a book or two but I want a better life for my children and grandchildren and Robin hood values is not the way to gain independent wealth!
Frank Capone September 9, 2012 at 03:40 pm
Robin I would love to hear more SPECIFICS on your small business & corporate job experiences. I guess you prefer Romneyhood take from the middle class and give to the rich, that worked so well under Bushwacker #2??? Also I hope your investments are vast enough to subsidize your children & grandchildrens voucher care, because LYING RYAN got his so the heck with yours!!!!!!

Just another bitter democratic party member. I guess its OK for BO well on his way of bankrupting this country, just as Danny boy Malloy is doing to CT. Blame everyone else for your and this country's problems. If this path continues you will wake up one day living in a country totally controlled by the Federal government. They will tell you what to do, when to do it, every business under the control of the fed's. You just hate it when those in the society we built, yes we, for "making it". You, as do so many, so far on the left feel that they owe you a piece of the pie. I bet you have distain for the likes of Bill Gates, and all those self made billionairs in silicone valley. You were and I believe still are in the travel business, but due to the advent of on-line travel arrangements we no longer need you, thus agencies are slowing closing. But lets blame someone for that.
Dan McCann September 9, 2012 at 07:16 pm
Frank maybe you lost your travel business because of Al Gore's invention of the Internet. Or maybe you lost it because people realized they could do better with Priceline.com or other Internet operators. Lastly, maybe your involvement in politics could have hurt. I seriously doubt that big oil had much do with it. Many small business failures come from within. You simply did not provide a service that evolved with the current market conditions.
Frank Capone September 9, 2012 at 08:28 pm
Robin your better than Edger Bergan you got one on each hand!!!!!!!!!
Rosie September 9, 2012 at 09:51 pm
Senator Fasano has done a lot for the residents of East Haven. A lot of behind the scenes things to better East Haven and especially it's children. What, I ask, have you done, Mr. Hoff, except run a few food drives, which everyone does?? You sit home all day, doing nothing, collecting "ahem" disability, and you have the nerve to begrudge someone who is actually well educated, working hard and making a living, and a good one at that? Everyone has the same opportunities, Mr. Hoff. If you squandered yours, that's your problem. You are nothing but a big bag of hot air, with absolutely no substance.

Rosa “out-of-touch-with-reality” DeLauro has proposed raising the federal minimum wage in three stages to $9.80 per hour: an increase of 35% over the current level. Studies project job losses in the range of 256,000 to 768,000 following a wage hike of this magnitude, according to Employment Policies Institute, a nonprofit research organization focusing on employment growth, with emphasis on issues that affect entry-level employment. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicate that of employees working at or near the current minimum wage of $7.25, nearly 50% are under age 25; 43% work in food prep & serving occupations, where profit margins are low. The result will be loss of hours, employment, or both. Among teens, the unemployment rate is already 23.8% nationwide. http://www.wcbm.com/includes/news_items/29/news_items_more.php?id=161961&section_id=29

Thank God yes Frank after investing in the market for 40 plus years we are blessed and worked many long hard hours and paid lots of taxes! As for my family they will be fine. We gave our daughter a great paid for education and she owns her own home and has a great career and her husband has a successful family business. They were taught to be prudent invest well and work hard. I am not saying everything is perfect but with long term planning one can still become wealthy. And yes I had an excellent career but I started off selling hotdogs and working banquet work at 14 when I did not have to. I had my dads ambition and my husband came also from a hardworking family from Manhattan . I am for fare taxation. The wealthy do the majority of big ticket purchases and hire most service jobs such as. Housekeepers, pool boys, landscapers contractors and such! There will always be greed I am happy to pay my fare share but I know if Obama keeps up this horrible pace of spendthrift borrowing. Everyone will be worse off. Look at the person not the party!

WE THE PEOPLE have no say in how governments govern nor how OUR money is spent. WE supposedly electRead More people who take the trust of the people with them when elected and do the will of WE THE PEOPLE. This has never happened. Especially in state and federal office.
