Updates on 50th Anniversary of the CT Irish Festival

The 50th Anniversary of the CT Irish Festival: Two days packed of fun, music, cultural activities and sports from June 23rd-24th

At the 50th Anniversary of the CT Irish Festival, there will be three music venues on both days. We are honored this year to have the FDNY and the NYPD play a Gaelic Football demonstration at 6PM on Saturday June 23rd.

Also on Saturday we will be hosting two tug of war competitions one is the Battle of the Bravest and the other is a Battle of the Irish Bars. The Battle of the Bravest will be made of entries from area paid fire department teams. The entry fees will be donated to the Leary Firefighter Foundation for further details contact Seamus Bohan at seamusbo@hotmail.com 203.996.6748.

The Battle of the Irish Pubs entry will benefit a charity to be determined. Will your favorite local pub have a team and bragging rights for a year? Call Seamus for further details.

For children we will have small carnival rides, an Irish magician performing two shows each day, and complimentary, professional face painting. Celebrating Irish agricultural roots we will have alpacas on display/ petting and alpaca wool spinning demonstrations. The alpacas were a big hit last year. Both days we will also feature sheep herding demonstrations. In Ireland alpacas have become more popular, since they can protect sheep and have less of an impact on the environment.

On Sunday we have the Feis or Irish dancing competitions. This cultural activity is something great to watch if you never have seen Irish dancing. Many students of Irish dance take part in this since members of their family may have been involved.

There is also Irish bread baking competition on Sunday, Irish Language, singing, and fiddle playing competitions. There are also vendor areas where you can purchase Irish goods, clothing, jewelry, and music cds just to name a few of the many items available. If you wanted a claddagh ring or Irish sweater, here is your chance. The vendors are set up for both days.

If you would like to see entertainment schedules, they are available at www.ctirishfestival.com. You can also follow us by "liking" us on our Facebook page.

Eventhough, the Irish and Italian Festivals are great to host here in Town, I believe in taking things to the next level. I contacted the North Haven Fairgrounds months ago. People should consider hosting an International Food Festival filled with great food and entertainment held at the North Haven Fairgrounds. I started working with this idea months ago and it's still pending. I will not release the details at this time, but people I've spoken to love the idea. To my knowledge it's not been done before on a Town/City scale here in CT. It could become as popular as the North Haven Fair. The Fairground location provides easy I-91 access with the Wilbur Cross Parkway within 1-1/2 miles. Area Supermarkets will sell some of the food and smaller Food Service Businesses will sell their specialties at the Food Festival, as well. Small businesses get a feel for the area as some will come from far away. Many would never get to know what a great Town North Haven is, otherwise.

MY International Food Festival idea: From an Economic Development standpoint it brings focus to developing northern Washington Avenue as a possible location for a business to settle in as that's where the North Haven Fairgrounds is located. It brings people to Town to spend money. This is good for the Town knowing it brings in visitors from all over, so even those out for a good time may get an idea to start a business here. It generates Tax Revenue for the Town especially with the end result being; businesses may decide to settle here. It gives the small food service business owner a trial of how well accepted their business is at the festival giving them some publicity that would otherwise go unnoticed. Businesses draw more people to the area and that draws more businesses to the area, as well. Even after the Food Festival is over, the benefits coming from it remains active, as it could help develop northern Washington Avenue with some unique businesses coming to Town. It could help bring northern Washington Avenue back to life while we keep the small Town atmosphere.

Martini, no harm was intended by my comment. The CT Irish Festival is a great event and it brought to mind that here in North Haven we have an Irish Festival in June and the Italian Festival in late summer that add to CT festivities. I just felt it was an opportunity for me to share my International Food Festival idea with the public as that includes everyone from every culture. It's a pending issue so we'll see what happens. I'm sorry you felt offended by me sharing my idea. You need to lighten up and not critisize so much. You are the perfect example of why different cultures can't seem to get along. I try to bring more people together to have some fun and you knock it. There's no reason why my idea couldn't be as much of a fundraising event as the CT Irish Festival is helping charities, so why do people beat me up over it is one thing I'll never understand. It makes me wonder why some complainers even want to be part of such events when they seem so bitter towards everyone.

Pam,
The Screaming Orphans will be back and will play both days. The Mickey Finns have a new cd out and will also be playing both days. Seven Nations will close the festival on Saturday and Celtic Cross will close the festival on Sunday. The music will be great. McLean Ave. Band, which plays in several locations in New Haven, will play on Sunday. There will also be a ceili dance on Saturday night, which is a great cultural event.

I had family visit from out of town to attend a Little League game down by the beach. They justRead More loved the entire area, especially the splash pad and the Sandpiper. It made me stop, look around and appreciate how fortunate we are in East Haven to have such a great place for so many activities.

Gov. O'mally is ruining this State by driving more and more people into poverty, giving illegalsRead More drivers licenses, letting criminals out of jail early, pushing good companies out, and making it's citizens unsafe. Time to clean house starting locally!

WE THE PEOPLE have no say in how governments govern nor how OUR money is spent. WE supposedly electRead More people who take the trust of the people with them when elected and do the will of WE THE PEOPLE. This has never happened. Especially in state and federal office. Once in office the power they discover they now have pushes aside the will of the people. It an attitude of we have the power and you don't. Someday, but I doubt it, we can elect those who will not loose site of why they were elected.
