Young Students' Math Scores Plummet

East Haven's results from the 2011 Connecticut Mastery Test, given to students from third to eighth grade, saw many declines – and some minor improvements.

State officials praised the improved results from the Connecticut Mastery Test, but East Haven has not kept up the pace after posting many declines tempered with some improvements.

Across the board, math scores plummeted in the standardized test given to students from third to eighth grade. In third grade, the math score dropped 6.2 percent. The declines in all other grades were less steep, but none showed improvement.

In third and eighth grade, every category, including reading and writing, declined from the previous year. The best news from the report was that reading scores slightly improved from fourth to seventh grades.

While East Haven largely saw declines, the state was pleased with the improved scores throughout the state.

“It is encouraging to see that our public schools are making progress by increasing the numbers of students who are moving into the Proficient level of performance and from the Proficient level into the Goal level,” said George Coleman, acting commissioner of the state Board of Education.

He added, “However, our greatest challenges are ahead of us. We must accelerate our efforts to improve the outcomes for those students who are at risk of scoring below Proficient, while at the same time challenging all students to perform at higher levels.”
